Integrating a double din nav into a classic car dashboard

has anyone ever seen this done well on any pre 1980s car? any pics? Ive seen a few awful installations where they just stick out like a sore thumb but I'm thinking if you can blend them into a wood veneer surround somehow or maybe install them behind a lift up lid? Anyone seen anything like that?

Definetly do-able. The exact specifics depend on the car and level of finish required . Are you planning to do it yourself ?

No I'm not going to do it myself. Wanted to see if anything had been done that would give me an idea. I see it has been done on some modern cars like the original Audi TT had a cover over its audio unit but it was only single din

Hi Craig,

Take a look at the Parrot Asteroid Smart and the Alpine iLX-700. Both of these units are shallow depth as there's no disk mechanism inside.

If there's not enough depth for those, then look at the Parrot Asteroid Tablet. This is a hideaway control unit and a slim 5 inch 'display' which should be easily installed in the space you do have.

Cheers will look them up. I think I will have to go for a remote workings system because there isn't much depth due to the heater matrix.

Ive had a look. The Alpine looks good. I guess you could just use maps for navigation and the signal should be good enough to use that now. Looks like that might be a plan... thanks!

I have a 1989 BMW 635CSI and I have fitted a Clarion NZ502E system which has replaced the OEM Pioneer system. It is a single din system with a pop out screen. It projects about 1/4 inch further than the original system with the screen down. It has all the bells and whistles. Radio, Bluetooth,Telephone, CD and Ipod. Not cheap at about £575 but does the job and looks the part.

That would be no good for me. The unit is situated too far down and is indeed so screen would foul. I am going to go for an Alpine ilx-700 and will make the dash to fit then re-veneer it

These are just cheap, low quality mass produced units that are churned out from some low grade electronics sweatshop somewhere. Hopefully, the one you have will continue to work properly longer term. Good luck!
