The discs and pads on my RS6 need replacing soon (gulp...!) - anyone got a good alternative to West London Audi?

I'm based in Teddington (near PH HQ!), but would consider a bit of travel if the price/reputation warrants it.

Thanks!

BTW, West London are quoting £1,099 for front discs and pads and £889 for the rears.

Euro car parts do the genuine Audi / Pagid sets for a lot less.

There is a thread on RS246 with all the details

http://forum.rs246.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=11...

Get a set of those and a good Indie to fit them.

Cheers

Etka lists front discs RRP at £377.51 each
front pads set £265.43

Rear discs £341.96 each
rear pads set £103.36

So if those prices are fitted, it's not totally unreasonable based on the parts prices for OEM.

The RS246 thread looks interesting if they are as near as damn it the same part. Given the size of them and they're unlikely to fit anything else in the VAG range I'd say you're on fairly safe territory with them. They're most likely German made and not the Chinese made 'Pagid' stuff they sell for lesser models.

The discs don't show up on ECP so you may need to visit....

For an initial cost of £20 more per front disc and £50 rear disc (over the Ekta price) you can fit 2 piece AP Racing discs. As a bonus, when you come to replace them you only replace the rotor, saving you £100 per disc (AP rotor is £300) AND you get better performance too AND you can use Pagid RS29 or Ferodo DS2500 etc pads instead of Audi.

It's worth considering!

Fitted them to mine with DS2500, ATE Super Blue Fluid and no stone guard (allows for extra cooling) and they are awesome!

Interesting! Car is still under Audi warranty and I think I'd like to keep it all standard (e.g. 572bhp is 'enough', even though friends are trying to convince me otherwise and get it chipped!).

I guess what I'm really after is a good indie to do the work.

The prices quoted by West London Audi are inclusive of labour and VAT, so not too outrageous given the price of the OEM parts.

I think the tyres are close too - anyone know how much a kidney goes for on eBay these days? smile

You've got Dr G's outfit just down the road (google Fontain Audi) and I know they do servicing/maintenance jobs as well as sales

I'm quite a bit further South nr Gatwick so my usual is prob a bit far

There's a few about and tbh there's nothing fancy about doing a brake job on one of these - it's the cost of the parts that makes it eye watering!

Awesome - I'll give Fontain a buzz.

Gatwick is actually not too bad from here - who are your guys down there? I might give them a call too.

Thx

I generally use Camspec as they're very local to me - they're on Manor Royal Ind Est in Crawley

OK, very interestingly, both Camspec and Fontain are quoting MORE than West London Audi - I guess they get better pricing on parts than indies...

I need to get my micrometer on the discs to check if they really need replacing. They all have a lip, but the thickness could still be in tolerance.

Anyone know what the minimum disc thickness is? Couldn't find it in the manual.

I've got a feeling it's written on the bell of the disc, if you take a wheel off?

I can have a look on ElsaWin tonight, but don't have access away from home.

I'd expect to lose a couple of mm off the disc for each set of pads, so if they're borderline on the wear limit they'll probably be well shot before the pads are gone.....

It sounds like West London are basically fitting them FOC/offsetting the parts discount they can get against the labour bill. Were Fontain and Camspec quoting OEM only, or looking at ECP parts option?

The only car I know that seems to have more expensive brakes than the average, ignoring ceramics, is the B7 RS4! Discs for that make your eyes water if buying OEM.

Thanks for that - my guess is that the discs will need replacing, just trying to be optimistic smile

Camspec and Fontain both quoted OEM, but are coming back with counter quotes. I quite like the idea of keeping it all OEM (especially as it's still under Audi warranty), but my wallet may disagree!

General rule of thumb is 2 sets of pads = 1 set of discs with modern cars, assuming no funny wear or spectacularly heavy use

OK, assuming you have 390mm discs (PR code 1LM) then new front discs are 36mm thick, and wear limit is 34.4mm

Rear discs (1KJ) are 28mm new and wear limit is 26.4mm

Those PR codes should be in the front of your service book to confirm size smile

OK - so the rear discs and pads are fine (confirmed by a specialist), so it's just the fronts that need doing.

After to'ing and fro'ing between indie and dealer, West London Audi dropped their pants and matched my lowest quote. As the car is booked in for a service anyway, I guess they get the work!

Still an eye-watering £1,000, but that pays for a lot of steel!

Thanks all
