Mk 5 Golf GTi purchase - buyers guide/what to be aware of?
Discussion
My son is keen to purchase a Mk 5 VW Golf GTi with the 2.0 TFSi petrol engine and DSG gearbox.
Can anyone point me to a good buyers guide for that model please?
We know that they should have the DSG oil changed at the recommended intervals and I believe that they have a cambelt that should be changed at the recommended intervals. Anything else in particular which he needs to check?
Thanks.

Usual stuff like diverter valve will likely need replacing, PCV, CV boots, rusty arches, coil pack recall and as mentioned cambelt along with dsg oil
Good news is it's a very solid engine and if looked after properly capable of covering proper high mileage!

Checking the Aircon works would be high on my list.
Can be difficult now we're in the colder period of the year!selling my mk5 gti after only 6 months of owning it.Bought it with 44k on the clock one owner fsh etc.It was an absolute pleasure to drive until it started to "rattle its tits off".
Dashboard rattles, both doors cards rattle, centre storage box rattles, passenger seat rattles if no one is sat in it,tail lights rattle despite being glued as per fix by vw themselves.
The interior build quality for any make of car is poor let alone a vw.The rattles despite numerous attempts to fix them are persisent and incredibly annoying.
I can't tell you to check for rattles on a road test as mine had none when i bought it !

If you can stretch to an Edition 30, it's the one I would get. The engine is not only more powerful, but it's stronger and uses way less oil than the regular GTI engine. The car also looks better with the BBS wheels and colour coded skirts and bumpers, plus they hold their value better.
What to look out for is widely publicised on the net but as with any car, the faults are usually exaggerated.
I've had my Edition 30 for over a year now and it's on 94K. All it's needed in that time outside of scheduled maintenance is a pair of rear springs, 1 CV boot, an indicator strip for the wing mirror and a rear wheel bearing. All easy, cheap and simple to replace.
As above, the interior quality isn't brilliant, a noticeable step down from the MK4, so if that's a major deal, save up for a MK6 as it's a big leap forward in quality.

Yeah there are a lot of abused ED30s out there.
In my experience, excessive interior rattling in Golfs is usually always as a result of previous owners dicking about with it. Like fitting aftermarket ICE, repairing window regulators and A/C faults and not replacing broken clips etc etc.
Having said that, you can't expect silence over bumps in a stiffly sprung hot hatch running 18" wheels that's got some years and miles under it's belt.

I never had any rattle issues with my GTis - One was a nearly new 3dr 07 plate and the other was a few years old at the time 5dr with 70k on the clock.Dashboard rattles, both doors cards rattle, centre storage box rattles, passenger seat rattles if no one is sat in it,tail lights rattle despite being glued as per fix by vw themselves.

This is surprising as the roads around here in the north-west are some of the worst in the country.

That has always been my argument - stiffly sprung cars are always more likely to rattle eventually. In my experience, excessive interior rattling in Golfs is usually always as a result of previous owners dicking about with it. My girlfriend was considering changing hers at some point. Not sure she'll be able to afford to though, as she wants something much newer and more expensive!
Hers is a 2006 GTI DSG in red, R-Tech custom remap, 250hp, goes like a stabbed rat! Lots of kit/options on it too. Really nice car.
