From a boy I always dreamed of owning a c-type or d-type Jaguar, but as I have not won the 'Euromillions', it would need to be a replica.

On the other hand, the wife has always dreamed of an Aston!

A year ago, I would have also looked at Ferrari 308, 328, 348, 355 etc, but prices have gone up by 20-30k in 12 mths!

So the current shortlist is:
C-Type replica
D-Type replica
SS100 replica
DB9 Volante
DB7 Volante
E-Type fhc

Possibilities:
Bentley GTC
XJS 'Celebration' Convertible (with change!)

No Cobra replica's as too many around!

Use will be Sunny days and a few European Tours (we are based in SW France).

What would you do? - Any alternative suggestions? - Anyone know of good cars for sale?

Cheers

Glynn

How about one of these ??

The designer/builder, Stan Daniels, is a friend and neighbour. ( the SD in SD500 wink )

He is thinking of moving his personal car on.
The car is in white.

It won't be at the top end of your budget either.

Think you may find that the decent C and D Type replicas have edged out of your budget too.

I do like that Stan Daniels 500, but can't read anywhere what engine it has got?

That may restrict you from some of the replicas, purely based on what you can or can't get through the service des mines.

Thanks guy's....the SD500 does look very interesting and I really do hanker after something 'a little different'!

Used D-Types replicas seem sensible money, but C-Type replicas have also gone crazy in the past 12 mths.

When I brought the Caterham to France with me (10 years ago), it was impossible to get it registered (even though it was a factory car), so I am thinking about keeping the next car UK registered (I do have a UK address as well) and travelling back to the UK each year for MOT. - With the Caterham, I managed to get a 12mth green card through Adrian Flux, but don't know if this is still available?

Isn't France like the UK, where it's illegal for a resident to drive a foreign-registered car? Yes, I know two-thirds of ex-pats do, but...

You are correct........but as I have two addresses (one UK and one French), it could fall between two stalls.

I think the bigger problem may be the availability of a 12mth green card nowadays!

Something a bit different is this XK150 ( or is it a 120? ) replica my stepfather is selling. It was built as a turnkey car in the USA and is absolutely gorgeous ( the whitewalls are not to my taste but he has another set for it I think ) . I have driven it, it's an absolute blast and allegedly has nearly 300bhp from it's 4.2 ( it is plenty fast enough ha ha ha and sounds like an AK47 gunfight at full chat and over run.... ) if I could afford it I would buy it off him myself, he wants around £40k. Car is in Sussex near Brighton

The main problem with good replicas is the they usually cost as much as good originals.

With a £50k budget and a desire to own a classic Jag, something like this would be my preference:-

Had assumed that a decent xk120/140/150 would be over budget, but definitely interested.

I am meeting with Roger at Suffolk in a couple of weeks, whilst back to the UK.

Also will be looking at a series 2 E-Type 2 + 2...........seems like huge disparities in prices at the moment for what appear to be similar condition cars.

Who'd have thought that spending money could be so difficult!

You won't be buying an SS100 off Roger for sub £50k. For a fibreglass replica they're expensive in my opinion.

While not a faithful replica a Panther J72 was very expensive when new and is made of aluminium. You can always play around with the details with the money left over ! Birchfield also made alloy bodied traditional roadsters on the SS100 lines.

A Kougar Jaguar is one of the best made Jaguar Specials, they usually sell for £25-£35k and will run rings round a Suffolk. Looks are not to everyone's taste but again you can always change things to suit yourself.

What about this Adams Roadster ?

http://www.totalheadturners.com/detail/motors/clas...

Alternatively you could try something Austin Healey based.

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C629360

While XK's may be had within your budget, be very careful that you don't end up spending an awful lot more on them once purchased. Having said that they will prove to be a sound investment if you get a decent one. Likewise E Types.

You really need to decide which type of car will give you the most enjoyment i.e. what will it primarily be used for. Your shortlisted cars include a C-type replica and an Aston DB7 which are very far apart in driving experience.

I always enjoy touring in something a bit different and with a real classic feel and a DB7 for example would be too bland for my tastes. On the other hand a C type replica might be a bit short on creature comforts for your wife.

I'm not an expert on Jaguar for how close to original any of these replicas look, but this is what New Zealand can offer.

Here is a C Type replica for £28k plus shipping wink

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/jaguar/a...

Over budget at £70k plus is this D Type replica or the SS100 replica

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/jaguar/a...

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/jaguar/a...

and for something a bit different at £24k plus shipping, a 1954 Jaguar "XK Boat tail"

Viscount: I will pm you once I have a better idea of timings

MPH: Thanks for your suggestions - they are all interesting cars, but I wonder how good an investment?
Do you know of anyone in the 'Kent' area who is a specialist/knowledgeable on E-types and would take a look at a car with me? - Obviously for a fee!

Mark: That c-type in NZ looks good value

And shipping isn't too bad. Probably around £3000 and takes about 6 weeks.

The best investment will usually be a genuine classic. Having said that, a well built decent replica or special is unlikely to depreciate.

The E Type world can be a minefield, unfortunately I haven't dealt with anyone in Kent. I'd suggest you use someone who specifically knows E Types rather than just a competent motor engineer as the devil is in the detail.

I know of at least three "roadsters" that turned out to be converted fixed heads. One was for sale at top money from a well-known classic car dealer.

Another E-type was advertised at a premium auction house as being matching numbers. Not only was that not the case it actually had a Mk2 engine fitted.
