So this came with the car when I purchased it and I just assumed it was an 'emergency' key. So thought to try it yesterday and it doesn't fit.

Nowt to do with your car unless you have one of their gear locks fitted.

So does the car come with a key that works the doors or is that a dealer thing

You should have gotten one, but the original owner or dealer lost it.

What's with Aston owners and keys? Seems like it's normal for the original owner to lose or keep keys to the car?
So all I've got is one glass key that works(I swapped the guts with the plastic one) and a plastic that only starts but doesn't lock the car.

I'd go back to where you bought it and ask them to rectify the key situation. What is it with Aston buyers who don't make sure they get all the right keys when they buy a car?

Excellent question. I'm the 4th owner and the dealer, non Aston, that I purchased from said these were all he had. I suppose I should have made him include replacements in the deal. Guess I was a bit too excited at the time. My first Aston.
