Does anyone here make their own ice cream? Trying blood orange ice cream (paired with dark chocolate ice cream makes for a chocolate orange master-class) on holiday has convinced me to buy a machine, surprised I haven't done it sooner.

Any exotic recipes worth a go?

If you buy a machine, sorbets are also well worth making. We had an excess of plums this year & the roast plum sorbet went down a treat. Pina colada ice cream is good — as is any ice cream with alcohol as an ingredient. smile

If you are going to buy a machine its worth spending extra on one with a built in freezer not one with a bowl that is frozen first.

I have made a few. Tried some Gordon Ramsay recipes which used fresh ingredients like fresh mint leaves and strawberrys and the flavor wasn't quite right. Probably need better fresh stuff.

Yet another kitchen appliance that will see enthusiastic use for a few weeks, then be consigned to a cupboard never to see the light of day again...

Its not to everyones taste but Earl Grey ice cream with blue corn flowers and a tarte tatin is sublime.

Indeed. This happened to us too. We've used it approx 5 times in 5 years.

The Ben and Jerry's recipe book is worth a look though.

Not in this household. Ours has been used regularly for years & it will be used this week to make batches of apple sorbet. Apple & Calvados, Apple & ginger. Now, what other flavour combos can I think of? smile

If you do buy one with a bowl that needs freezing before use, make sure the bowl will actually fit in your freezer.

No special equipment needed for this one either!

Condensed milk makes ice cream really sweet and smooth.

Made this and it's ruddy good-

Texture is perfect. Just a pity there are no local strawberries any more, had to make do with very average ones from Holland.

If you are going to buy a machine where you have to put the bowl in the freezer, it does make an exceptional ice bucket if you get caught short and need to keep the champers cold on a warm evening.

I love making ice cream. I've made flavours ranging from Pumpkin to Carrot Cake to Sour Cream Guacamole with Nachos.

I made some Chorlton Crack for my neighbour and it was very good indeed:

What about gelato recipes?

Every gelato recipe I've seen has some comment or review stating 'this is ice cream, not gelato'. The Italians aren't half touchy with their food.
