In 2015 why on earth is this even a story, let alone headline news?

Does anyone really care? Would you really find yourself watching a game viewing a player differently because liked men?

No-one cares but the media is so desperate for a story that they'll 'big up' anything they can. TBH they've done it for far less many times in the past. That said, some celebs do like to 'come out' and sort of make a thing of it and most us look and say 'So What?'

Gay folk don't want it to be made a big deal and seen as different, then make a big deal about coming out.

This for me just highlights how backward/bigoted/unenlightened the football community is compared with the majority of the population. Why are homophobia and racism still acceptable among such a large segment of 'fans'?

In the UK, I don't think there is a problem with racism anymore than there is in general society. After all, most teams have players of various races in their squad and no one thinks twice about it. Racism is not accepted.
I think the same applies to gay players. No one thinks twice about it. I don't understand the fuss.

When the Mirror and the Mail (and yes I know) have it on their main websites that they know of 2 gay players "but have chosen not to identify them" and you have Luke Shaw "forced" to issue a statement that it isn't him, something is pretty fking broken either with the media or football or both.
