Retirement.....how do you fill the day?
Discussion
I've been getting ready for retirement since 2007, and I'm starting to get the hang of it.
Today:
1) A bit of a lie in to let the traffic thin
2) Off to Lincoln for breakfast
3) Nip up to Scampton to check out the Red Arrows winter training
4) Sandwich at Tattershall Castle to overlook the aircraft at Coningsby
5) Stand at the end of the runway at Coningsby to see 2 x Eurofighters take off (and wow, seriously wow)
135 mile round trip for no real reason, other than I can
How do the other PHders with plenty of time on their hands fill it?

Pass my retirement time doing as I please, for a change!
First mug of coffee sat up in bed catching the overnight news, listening to neighbours going off to work
Check all my favourite web sites, and that my pension payments have been payed in
Workshop now, in time for Ken's pop master, continue renovating my latest steam engine.
Bit of lathe or mill work turning perfectly good pieces of brass into swarf.
Lunch and catch end of cricket.
Back in workshop
Sweep few leaves up
4 mile walk
Afternoon tea and snack
Catch latest pointless edition
Well that was today, everyday different, just love retirement! 4 weeks in the States next week.

Retired fully at the end of August, so far I have:
Refelted the shed/workshop roof

Ripped out old kitchen and installed new kitchen, re tiled and decorated
Ripped out old utility room and installed new units, retiled and decorated
Rebuilt garage side door frame door and window frame, fitted new door and glass
Had a week in Spain
Got to renew brake discs and pads on my partners car this week
A bit of dog walking
Drunk lots of cups of tea and coffee
Posted abit lot of rubbish on here
Now doing a list of the next jobs to be done over the next few months.
They do say you wonder how you ever found the time to go to work.

Well the wife and I get up at 7am and pop down to our local pool and try and get at least a mile of front crawl in each weekday morning.
Back home for about 9 after a chat with our swim buddies, then a leisurely breakfast takes us till about 10ish
During the warmer months I'll pop out on my Speed Triple for a couple of hours or in the 993 a couple of times a week. Wife will go out for lunch with her girl friends.
Then there's all the cutting grass, washing cars, sweeping leaves, preasure washing paths etc that I used to have to rush to do at weekends.
At the moment we've just started redcorating/refurbing bedrooms so a couple of hours in the morning and a couple more after lunch.
We also have a few BTL's so generally spend a few weeks each year on repairs/refurbs.
In between we try and get 5 to 6 weeks away on holiday somewhere hot through out the year, and then weekends away at Carfest/FoS/Revival etc.
Other weekends away catching up with old friends and relatives, all who live at least a couple of hours away, sometimes we will "divert" somewhere new on the way home and B&B it for a night or two.
Finally we have two daughters whose partners wouldn't know one end of a screw driver from another, although they are learning, and who both live a couple of hours away from us. So we get co-opted into "helping" with their refurbs/redecoration etc.
How we ever found time to work etc etc.....

Don't wish your life away but I can recommend retiring as soon as you can comfortably afford to.

This absolutely this, we have both had apparently fit and healthy friends and colleagues die in their 50's. We were very lucky that we could take the step at 51 and 3 years later don't regret it for a second.oldnbold said:
