I've had my eye on these for about a year. I'd always budgeted around 30K for one. I originally started saving a few years back with a Carrera 2 in mind for around 15K, but decided to hold out for what I always wanted and I've saved some money over from my last contract. I now have the cash free and my lease car goes back next year.

Taking 911virgin as an example the 996 turbo was around 30K, but they seem to be pushing 40K now.

I know no one has the magic answer, but now it's becoming about numbers and seeing what happens in the future rather than just buying one because I want it. To afford the car in the above link I'd have to take money out of savings which I was planning to use to move house and sadly I don't think I can justify that.

I guess I'm just musing to myself and browsing the classifieds and weighing it all up. At the moment we don't have a garage, and I'd hate to leave a a car like that on the street/driveway.

Yep, its all changed so much over the past 3 or so years.

There are some signs of a slowing, even a gentle decline, but there wont be any significant moves downwards any time soon in my view.

I would buy a 996t now.

You could still get them below £30k, mine is worth less than that, but it has 100k on the clock.

Have you not read all the threads regarding 996 turbo prices during the past few weeks.

A car which would have been around £28k last year are currently being advertised for around £45k.

Prices have gone insane.

Your probably better off paying the extra for a 997 turbo, however they have also risen around £5-£10k in the past 12 months.

I bit the bullet and bought one back in April.

Best way of luck with your search.

That's awful strong money for near on 60K tip.

Wonder what my Lapis blue manual is worth with 72K on it?

There are a few up for under 30k here on PH, so if you don't mind a few miles and Tip then there still within your budget.

I have to say, I never quite saw the point of a 966t with Tiptronic box. It seems to dull the performance far too much, and kill the overall experience of a 996t. Having said that, I've only ever driven the manual car.

I was always after a manual, as the Tiptronic doesn't appeal.

I guess I'll have to keep an eye out and weigh up my options. Moving house vs car? Tough one. laugh

My brother has a 996 turbo tip. I'd be amazed if the manual was noticeably faster. That car is very fast!

Manual 0-100 mph 9.2 secs
Tiptronic 0-100 mph 10.4 sec

not insignificant, but in gear will depend on circumstances

I found kickdown in tips to be quite slow-witted but I guess quicker than manually changing down

It never seemed to affect Kens (9E) car much!

How can you say it dulls the performance far too much if you've never driven one? I, and no doubt other tip owners on here, can assure you that it doesn't! smile

3rd gear is the 996tt's party trick - you can run from about 30 to very illegal without shifting. The engine's torquey enough that the need for down-shifting to 2nd is restricted to junctions or for fun, with the possible exception of hairpins.

Just that every Tip car I've driven, compared to the manual counterpart has felt relatively lifeless. I've compared a few, including 993 / 966 carreras, but not the 996t.

I think the 9E car might be a little different though. Even so, I'd still prefer a 9E car with a manual box in this sector.

I bought my 03 996TT Manual almost a year ago. Prior to that I was "studying" the car & the market for about 2 years. The prices have definitely moved up a bit since then. I think part of the reason is that as time goes on there are less and less very clean and well maintained cars out there. Also, I think people are starting to realize how much you get for your money with a 996TT. One of the great selling points for me, other than I have always wanted a Turbo! Is that after 911 Turbo 997.1 (997.2 and newer) no longer have the mezger/gt1 based engine.. with a 996TT you can have one. As far as I know the only other way to buy a modern Porsche with this engine is to buy a GT2/GT3. I bought mine totally stock and have had an amazing year with it, very happy with the purchase. The power is intoxicating, it feels like it can just keep on pulling for ever. Mine is a keeper wink

The joy of the tip is you can pootle around in auto like an oap Sunday driver if you feel like it OR drive it on the tip buttons keeping the turbo spooled with out having to worry about over revs or taking your hands off the wheel. Arguably better for the road.

That doesnt sound anything like joy to me, but hey, we are all different!
