Most drivers avoid BMWs and Fords

Which cars do you avoid?

A new survey has turned the tables on some long-held myths about which motors are best avoided on the roads. Modern drivers, it seems, are no longer keeping out the way of Volvo-man, ‘prats with a Porsche’ or ‘louts in a Land Rover’. And the old jokes about Skoda drivers and ‘Nissan nannies’ are but a distant memory.

Today, they are most keen to avoid those with a BMW or Ford, perceived to be the motors owned by the worst motorists. Not far behind are Vauxhall, so perhaps ‘Astra man’ is still considered something of an enigma on the roads.

Quoteacar.co.uk asked 400 of its customers to nominate the make of car they thought the worst drivers owned.

Joint top were BMW and Ford drivers with 13 per cent of the vote each. In third, Vauxhall drivers got eight per cent of the vote, closely followed by those in a Mercedes (five per cent).

At the bottom of the table there were some very mixed views. Expensive makes like Aston Martin, Bentley and Rolls Royce all scored very low, presumably because voters believe that when you’ve paid a lot of money for a car you’re going to drive it carefully. Less obvious low scorers were Hyundai, Kia, Suzuki and Saab.

"We appreciate that our customers are most likely to have answered this question based almost entirely on personal experience, so perhaps the results reflect the volume of particular makes on the road rather than a specific type of person who buys them," says Quoteacar’s Spencer Street.

"There was a time when if you saw a Volvo or Skoda you were fairly sure just what sort of person was behind the wheel, typically old and driving very slowly. Today, these stereotypes are not nearly so clear-cut, though it’s still fair to expect a certain personality when confronted by a Ferrari, Porsche or TVR.

"But with over 10 million motoring offences committed on our roads every year its obvious there are still a lot of bad drivers out there, even if it’s not entirely fair to characterise them by the make of car they drive.

"And don’t forget, despite what they drive, the 10 per cent of new drivers on our roads still account for 29 per cent of all accidents. But then experience is not so easy to see."

Hey, what's so obvious about Saab being a low scorer?

Apparently other drivers don't mind the flames coming out the exhaust as I drop a gear and disappear for the horizon...

My mother always used to say 'Dont ever buy a Fiat as the only buggers that will buy it off you are Fiat dealers'

So on that basis I've never owned one.

Its the X5 driving mothers in Fulham that get me - buy a car you can see over the steering wheel with, then buy the highway code - and read it when your sitting in Starbuck's waiting for your little brats to finish school so you can clog up the roads when your pick them up!!!!!

10 million motoring offences... maybe it's time to redefine whats an offence and what is bad driving, the two are certainly not related...

Laguna drivers don't use indicators

Audi drivers speed

Volvos drive like there's a strong wind from the side

Fords are impredictable

Daihatsus are dead slow

Golfs are ignored

Raris have a nice soundbite

Err, I'll stop here . . .

This all from a survey of percieved bad driving.

IIRC the 3 Series outsells the Mondeo so add the sales of these onto other BMWs and Fords and these will be some of the most popular cars on the roads.

Assuming X percent of drivers are bad would meand X% of lots of cars = still a fair few!

A bit like that other statistic that you're most likely to have a crash within 10 miles of your home. Since pretty much every journey you embark on starts and finishes from your home you must spend a lot of time on these roads, so the probability of having a smash on them rises.

Also as its a 'survey', it depends by what standards those drivers questioned define 'bad' driving.

Lies, damn lies and statistics.

driving down the M4 last weekend in the "fast" lane, traffic in front and to my side - nothing to do but be patient

car drives up my arse with front fogs on (dark no fog)

missus: "what's the idiot behind you doing"
me: "probably a BMW 3 series"

I pull over as soon as I can and BMW overtakes

missus: "how did you know that"
me: "just a wild guess"

behind every stereotype lies a modicum of truth

Ha, Micra's - they got to be the worst, if you've ever driven one of the new ones (had 1 as a hire car for a day) you'll know why people drive them like they do. They handle so badly that it's too dangerous to drive them fast! Last week, cycling along the seafront, a Micra slowly drove past, in fact so slowly it had a few cars backed up behind hoping to overtake. I thought I should make my opinion known about this and give the poor guys behind a laugh - so I peddeled a little harder, moved over to the centre of the road, and over took it. TBH I don't think the Micra driver even noticed and waht's more, I didn't get overtaken by him further down the road either.

Got to laugh!!!

Another bit of wisdom from a parent was "stear clear of anyone driving whilst wearing a hat"

Sound advice I have found.

Any car that hat one of those hats that old people wear while bowling. I think it is a Panama hat. One of those on the parcel shelf means 22mph down the middle of the road with an indicator flashing.

Rover drivers! Aaarrrggghhh.

Rover drivers with panama hats. They are so close to the funeral home and you are so close to the car (that is doing 15mph) you can smell the formaldehide.

I've overtaken cars on my bicycle too, but normally the response from these "safe" drivers is pretty aggressive (similar to when I pass them in my car). So (on a bike)I prefer them in front of me, where I can see them.

BMW have been top of my list for years, with Mercedes a close second. Of course, living in Surrey means that 4x4's of any make come third.

The worst drivers by a mile must be Micra drivers. When it comes down to basics, at least the BMW drivers are actually interested in their cars, and the Mondeos are capable of holding their own on a motorway.

Micras are bare-minimum cars bought by the sort of people who'd chop their left arms off if they thought they didn't need them. Incapable of holding a decent cruising speed, accommodating anyone in comfort, impressing anyone with any kind of engaging style either inside or out, not big enough to be used to carry anything other than frill-free economy shopping. To be honest, most cars that size that don't handle (especially those godawful taller-than-wide, top heavy and ridiculously cramped Wagon-R-type things) or do anything particularly well other than go on forever . The Micra just seems to personify all of them.

The most annoying thing about them? Everyone I've spoken to who owns them 'loves' them in a sickly teddy-bear fashion.

Horrible, nasty, hateful little scumboxes. I hate them on a molecular level.
