Radar detectors

Thinking about getting one of these. I gather Road Angel is the best-seller but is it the best and can it be moved easily between cars?

My main concern is the fixed roadside camera but obviously would like protection against mobile radars and anything else that might be out there.

Needless to say I have no intention of breaking any speed limit I simply wish to proceed as safely as possible.

Recently got a Road Angel 2, nice piece of kit.
Transfers form the Mini to the Chim no problems other that the Mini needed an ariel as it has a heated screen.

I have a Road Angel Classic, which is a quality piece of kit that I wouldn't be without.

While the RA2 is undoubtedly more advanced, it may be worth thinking about the Classic as the laser detection can be easily switched off (by unplugging the 'fatman' detector).

To my knowledge, this can't be done with the RA2 (the laser detection unit is integral to the unit) and with legislative changes expected which will outlaw laser detectors (but not GPS-based units), the Classic may make it easier to stay within the law...

Oh, the Classic's are also quite a bit cheaper than the RA2s as well.

Im well pleased with my Origin B2, and its still going to be legal when the new law comes into force banning radar detectors. Though Ill have to remove the lazer detector.

i bought a Speed Cheetah 6 months ago - the one that fits over your rear view mirror - really easy to fit, mirror gives 180 degree view and is far superior to std mirror, city mode, night mode, it picks absolutely everything up - but thats the problem, your driving and its constantly warning you even on an empty motorway at 3am in the morning, not sure what its picking up but could be supermarket doors, electric gates from soem distance, in the end ive turned it off and its now a very expensive rear view mirror !!!!!

with the RAII you can turn the laser detector off,but i agree the old RA is just as good,infact if you dont need the compass or clock,i think the original is a better choice,as you could buy a lifetime subscription for it,which you cant with RAII.any device is a little awkward to place if you use the cigar point though.i place mine on an angle on drivers side of windscreen near pillar!but will be hardwiring a lead in the center of dash later.

Road Angels are availabe with a lifetime subscription (about £100 extra) which is what swung it for me.
I move my road angel classic between cars no problem, mine even came with two power leads.
I wouldn't be without it now.

Anyone got some pics of the RA mounted in a Chim.??

I'd love to get one of these, but I'm not sure it'll suite the Chim's 'classic' interior.

Does it have to be plugged into the 'cigar' lighter.??

Does it work as well in a glass fibre car as a normal steel euro-box.??

its only proposed legislation at the moment so no date set - thats what the plan is though.

can take a pic this weekend if you want. It basically sits anywhere you want it in the tray that attaches itself to the windscreen via suction pads. Nothing electrical is really going to suite the chims interior but its either that or risk fines and points at your peril. I don't fancy having the most classic interior of a banned driver thanks.

Yes, it plugs into the cigarette lighter. I run the lead around the end of the door and up the side of the dash meaning you cant see the lead unless you look closely. I keep the RA on the side of the windscreen to the right so the lead sits down the side but its still in my line of vision as relying on the audible warnings is rather dangerous in a car with an exhaust note as loud as mine.

Glass fibre car?? its a GPS system so once it gets the satellite positions it would work on a tub of margarine if you wanted to drive down the road on one. The laser detector attachment has been known to not work as well in TVRs, but allegedly (according to the company that make the RA) that is due to the electrical interferance rather than the materials used in producing the bodywork.

Hmmm... with a jammer built-in, it doesn't sound like it stands much chance of meeting current legislation, let alone the proposed changes.

And with the police switching laser bands etc so often, GPS is undoubtedly the way to go (IMHO).

...and there's no need to shout.
