OK, so I sold my ancient Astra that was stored in a farm building & SORN for some 3 weeks. Advertised locally & a couple of young lads come & buy it. Not being from Blighty, their English was not of the highest level & they had obvious trouble understanding procedures for sorting out V5 etc. Cash was exchanged, they drove the car away. All this around lunchtime. 10 days later 2 NIPs appear in yours truly's letter box, advising of 2 alleged speed infringements at the same camera(!!) within 10 minutes of each other. The alleged speeding involved around 42 in a 30 limit. The date was the same as the date of sale, but around 8pm. So, I filled in the form saying I'm not responsible, & sent it back to plod with a cover letter. I guess if this (i.e. the time of day) is contested, its my word against the buyer. I did keep a photocopy of signed/dated V5, but there is option to time stamp it..... I have yet to receive notification from DVLA. Wish I'd scrapped the car instead!!
Any thoughts/advice from others??

As a person other than keeper, your obligation is to provide any information which is in your power give and which may lead to identification of the driver.

As long as you've told the police / SCP that which you do know, then I'd sit tight and await any further correspondence.

Did you put a time / date of sale on the sales receipt?

Sounds like it's you who had problems understanding the V5. It's *your* responsibility to fill out the V5 and send it to the DVLA, after both you and the buyer have first signed it. The buyer is just left with the 'new keeper supplement'.

I'm guessing you just let them bugger off with the V5?

OP said I did keep a photocopy of signed/dated V5, but there is no option to time stamp

Photocopy suggests they left with the whole V5, not the new keeper slip. Unless the OP copied it before sending off to DVLA?

The way I read it he kept a copy of the document he sent to the DVLA, hence the "no notification as yet" smile

For clarification:
I posted signed V5 to DVLA same day as sale, & photocopied before posting.

You must be having a good day today - you are usually about as cynical and jaded as I am smile

OP, time for stable door bolting - did you know you can do it online, which comes with a timestamp? biggrin

I've had this before, although mine was after a Part Ex with dealer.

Sent off a copy of the sales receipt with the form and never heard anything more.

You do not need to fill the V5 but do the sale on line at "Tell DVLA you've sold or bought a vehicle - GOV.UK" The car will be instantly tranferred to the buyer and both the buyer and seller get a E-mail with the TIME and date.

If you use the V5 although there is not a space to put the time in the buyers details you could put the time at the bottom of the page where you both sign and put the date.

Me too. Didn't even need to send the sales receipt - just sent the form back with the details of the garage I sold it to, and never heard about it again. I think you're worrying about this a little too much.
