Just missed out on a new Canon 20D "body only" on ebay.

Went for £690 it seems.

I was only half serious but would have bought at that money!

Now why would someone be selling one of those? If it wasn't an established seller, beware the scammer - last year a friend of a friend sent off £600 for a 10D ('unwanted gift') - and that was the end of that!

Yep, lots of scams on there for digital bodies at the moment. One I saw yesterday was blatantly copied from a US ad, even though it was a UK auction.

It was a concern.

Member had a long record and a good rating but apart from 3 totally mixed items in the very recent past seemed to have been dormant for a couple of years.

The ad was minimalistic. Link to Canon site.

Private auction so bidders names not visible. email bounced from hotmail due to 'excessive size, mailbox full etc'. message - standard stuff.

Fun while it lasted.

Quite a few of these going on too - there was an ad on there for a 1Ds the other day, and the previous items bought or sold were all items of clothing for 3-5 year olds!

Someone mailed the seller via ebay, and the genuine account owner replied saying she had no idea about the auction.

Generally, if it looks like it's too good to be true, it's probably dodgy.

Looking at the last three sales, all three have sold via Buy-it-Now within an hour or two of the auction starting. That's abnormal.

Also, Mom-of-Pepper left no return feedback on these sales.

Plus, one of the items is a laptop: another scammer's favourite. I'd say ID hijack followed by 3 fake deals to make it look good, then the trap is laid.

Funny too how it's a private auction...

Fishier than kipper pie; you're lucky you missed it

Somethings wrong with that sale. I'd be glad that it wasnt your money if I were you. And think, now at least you still have the money to get a proper camera, a Nikon!

"Please do not use Check Out, I will e-mail high bidder.NO CASH ON COLLECTION IN THIS MOMENT,please don't ask.The item will be sent out as soon as payment clears."

Totally crook.

Well I was suspicious as well but thought it might be an interesting thing to see if the bids rushed in at the last minute! Happily there was one after mine as predicted.

I would certainly have been very circumspect about paying out had I "won".

For those of the "other" persuasion, I've had a Canon AE1 for years and got a used A1 a few years ago as well so I guess my allegiance was set around that time.

Not that any of that kit would be useful in the digital world of course.

I nearly got caught out by a scam for a 20D on eBay, be very careful out there!

This was one where a scammer had gotten into the account of a reputable seller and listed the item. I became suspicious as it said to contact them on a certain email address and not the address listed in their profile!

It's not obvious how to do this although the contact member option indicates that the user is registered somewhere other than the UK (I get a warning about possible language issues) despite the listing indicating it originates in the UK.

Didn't think that was possible these days but am I missing something?

Interesting learning curve.

You're better off finding someone who is going to the States to pick one up for you. Got a 20d body last week in Nyk for ~£740......why risk ebay ?

Agreed. My interest in ebay was purely opportunistic on the day, though there are some FD lenses that lok interesting and are unlikely to be scams.

I'll have to talk to my US contacts.

Ah, of course! A quiet little link with so much in it!

Looks like an information exchange though. Not too happy if it is. Am I right?

It is an info exchange but if the person the other end is genuine he wont worry he might be gratefull if his account has been hyjacked. If its a scammer he wont receive the info

Im guessing its a hyjacked account as no communication it to be done using ebay checkout, which seems strange

Never did get round to checking but just had a mail offering a "Second chance offer" from EBay since it seems that the original purchaser is unable to complete the deal for some reason.

Hm ...

Update.

Can't see the seller info on the original - I think because it is not finished and I did not win. Can't tsee the info on tht new one as I have not bid (and don't intend to) - it's being offered as a 'Buy it now' deal.
