Buying a new (2nd hand) car and tax

It's been a while since I've had to do this, but given the new tax laws that exist, how does one actually go about buying tax?

I assume once buying the car, I can tax online straight away using the "new keepers" bit of the V5 book?

Or do like most probably do - if the car you are buying is still taxed, just drive it home and worry about it later as it will still show up as taxed on any cameras for several days.

Unless the previous keeper has had it on disability then you need to go to the PO and fill a form in. I travelled about 4 hours to Norfolk to buy a car and found this out. I did still drive the car home and sorted the tax the next day.

Can this be done from any P.O and do you need to take anything specific with you? I have a car sat in my garage I need to do this to.
