Hi folks.
I'm going to try and upload an image of my temperature reading from my 2003 2.7CRD Jeep Grand Cherokee.

This image is while the car is running "at temperature"

Can anyone tell me if this is normal for the jeep or do I need to fit the new thermometer I purchased?

Many thanks
Simon

Because your gauge is not linear you dont know what it is exactly reading in the picture, you need to find out what the actual temperature is then go from there. Either get adigital gauge fitted in the cooling circuit or get a laser temperature gun to find out what it is first and that will tell you if its over cooling or not.

Ok. Where exactly would I put the laser thermometer? I could likely get a hold of one tomorrow and check it.

Thanks

When I first bought my 2004 crd , I had exactly the same issue, which was in fact the thermostat, changed it and all was well, the gauge should sit at the straight up position when up to temp.New stat was about £65ish, quite simple to change ,just have to be carefull with the fiddly clips and pipe work around it. One giveaway is check the mpg on the over head display, because the engine is not reaching the correct temp the mileage suffers.Upon changing mine went from about low 20s to mid 30 mpg.

At the point of sensing, find the gauge sensor and check the temperature at that point to ascertain if your gauge is actually reading correctly

Its a fairly common problem, new thermostat will fix it. The sprinter thermostat also fits and opens at a higher temperature than the Jeep one, so that makes it run even hotter... which is a good thing.

one point to remember... if you change it DO NOT even slightly bend the derv pipe to get it off! remove the pipe! The pipes are very fragile and break very easily... and expensive.... don't ask me how I know this....

I had to replace the pipe, and when I went to the dealer he said " been changing the thermostat have we!!" seems I am not the only one this has happened to! The dealer even had the pipe in stock, which says something...

you can also use an OBD reader to have a look at the running temperature... £10 off Ebay or Amazon, connect to your phone. Useful for clearing some of the codes as well! here it is connected to my Ipad... not sure if this was on the Jeep or my other car, but you get the idea...

Thanks for the info. I have the thermostat now (with housing). I'll give it a bash over the weekend I think. What ODB device did you purchase that fits the iPad? Looks good.
I'll try and be carful removing/fitting. With my luck and this car, I'll no doubt snap the thing. Lol

Cheers

it was this one in the link below, I have used it SO many times!

when you change the thermostat, there will be derv pipes in the way... best to disconnect them so you can easily remove the housing. I tried to gently ease it past... big mistake, the fragile pipe broke. Changing the thermostat made a BIG difference to how the jeep ran, and also improved the MPG quite a bit.

good luck!

Well, the Amazon part is ordered, but I'm goin to tackle the thermostat today. I think I'll just disconnect everything in its path. Lol. I'll let you know how I get on (or if there are any issues).
Thanks
Again

Hi!

I just got the Jeep and seems to have the same 'problem' with it. Searched different sites and some guys claim that this is the right place the arrow should sit.
Well, it this the case? Did changing the thermostat solve the problem and when is the arrow now?

I know the topic was active a while ago but I did not have the Jeep back then :-)

Have you took the car for a good run? This time of year Diesels can take quite a while to heat up.

Yeah, went to Edinburgh and back a couple of days ago (aporox. 200 miles both ways) and the temperature even seemed to drop a bit...
