A few weeks ago my o/h noticed that there was some extra money in her current account, the credit had the reference "wages" so she phoned her bank to let them know, they said there was nothing they could do until they were contacted by the bank of the company that paid in the money, we expected that to happen within a week or so as obviously their employee will be wanting their money, is there a time limit to this? Should she transfer it into her savings account for safe keeping (& earn a few ponds in interest!) I once did the same myself after a new employee gave me the wrong details, but fortunately it just got returned as the account no he had given did not exist.

Leave the amount in the account and make sure it isn't spent.

I can't imagine it would take long for someone to realise they haven't been paid; I reckon they'll be after it in a few weeks.

If they don't collect it, then I'm not sure what to do with it. I'm guessing it's not like the HMRC, where they can come after it up to 7 years later. Stick it in another bank account and forget about it for 12 months I assume.

I was thinking that the savings account would stop her accidentally using it, the bank said that they can't just take it, they have to ask first so when/if they do she can just transfer it back.

I had something similar happen to me, £250 every week for over a month about 10 years ago. Didn't hear a thing.

Don't voluntarily transfer anything back, especially from a phone call or email. There was an old bankers draft scam where they paid you too much for something like a car. Asked you to refund the difference and then a few weeks later the bankers draft was voided.

I would leave it until my bank contacted me. I would then contact them back to discuss.

You can ask your bank to return the money to the sender. We have someone that has now paid money into our company account twice, and each time a quick massage to the bank gets it returned.

This is what she asked when she contacted them, but they said they can't do that.

That old scam eh! It's not that, it was a normal transfer for (I would guess) a months wages, must be nearly a month now so see if she gets paid again!

i had money paid into my account, spoke to the bank as wasn't sure why etc, asked them to send it back as we'd not long had people try fraudulent use of our account, so i was worried it was another scam etc.

2 days later i got a letter from hmrc saying here's your tax rebate, we've paid it already.

had to make a very crawly phone call to them, saying can I have my tax rebate back which i asked the bank to send back because i'm a worry wart and panicked smile

Friend of mine has the same name as the CEO of his firm - and clearly uses the same bank.

A few years ago their pay got swapped. My friend being a rather honest chap who also keeps close tabs on his finances noticed it first. The CEO hadn't despite being I imagine on lots more than my friend.

I recall reversing it was not instant, and took a bit of sorting.

It was a long time ago - so stuff may have changed.

What would be the position if the cash went into an overdrawn account, clearing the debt and when the error was discovered the bank refused to continue the line of credit to the account holder? Would the bank be forced to re-instate the overdraft?

The only snag is that I have forgotten the control word, so if he runs amok with his living weapon awesome killing machine skills we may be in a spot of trouble.
