Daughter reversed out of her usual parking space at her apartment car park, only to find some numpty had parked his van on double yellow lines behind her. Result was she damaged his wing mirror but broke her rear brake light and rear bumper.

Should she bung him a few quid to fix his mirror and pay for her own repairs, or point out that he was illegally parked and tell him to do one.

All responses gratefully received.

The bare cheek!

Pay for the damage to the other vehicle. Or your daughter will not learn the appreciation of damaging other peoples property.

It's OK, I just smashed into your car and drove off because you were parked illegally.

Being illegally parked my be an offence, but the penalty isn't to have your vehicle reversed into by someone who wasn't looking where they were going. The accident is 100% her fault, and yes, she should pay for his repairs.

She should pay up and regard it as the price of not looking where she's going.

Illegal parking is between him and the Council. Her hitting him is between him and her. She should make good.

I had this earlier this year when an idiot woman in a van parked at the side of a narrow road suddenly decided to start reversing into an entrance as I was driving past. She claimed it was my fault "because you were speeding".

(I wasn't,but anyone in a sports car is speeding all the time as far as some numpties are concerned).

Did she drive into a vehicle that was parked?

A valuable lesson in observation skills and the old adage that familiarity breeds contempt. Just because something wasn't there 99 times previously...

I'm trying to visualise how she broke his wing mirror and her light cluster and bumper. Was she driving an Urban Personnel Carrier of some sort?

Entirely her fault and she needs to learn the (small) cost of inattention before it becomes a high cost.

My mother did something similar to OP's daughter, only she reversed into a clients new baby - a 911 turbo.

She did not blame the client....

They way you've worded the OP makes it sound like she just got in and reversed, completely unaware of her surroundings laugh

Thanks for all the replies. She's paid up and hopefully learnt her lesson.

Come on guys play nice, the van was not there when she parked, she really should not be expected to notice it when she got back in the car.

I've known lamp posts to be built in car parks between parking and getting back into the car wink

Wow, OP, it sounds like you instil in your daughter a real sense of personal responsibility. She reversed into a parked van and that is the van driver's fault?

Top tip: have a chat with your golden princess about what the shiny mirror things dangling out of the car roof and doors are for.

Much like pedestrians , they tend to appear randomly too.

She needs to pay more attention to what's going on around her car , end of story.

OP, I was wondering what your view on the matter is? I can only think that you would share the majority view being expressed, but did you think otherwise?
