What is it?

Armstrong Siddley of some sort I think.

I've just found that it's 1956 & registered in Bristol. I wonder if that's any clue?
Armstrongs of that age seem to have a double bumper shape rather than the single shape of this car.

The bonnet mascot looks like a Sphinx to me, so my money is on an AS.

Weren't the smaller models called Sapphires?

I have the answer :-

It's a Bentley MK VI (#B299FU) with a one-off Ghia drophead coupe body. The chassis still exists, the body unfortunately not.

The car featured in Roberto Rossellini's 1954 film Voyage to Italy, so maybe the picture was a still from the film.
If so, the plates are almost certainly false to replace the Italian registration (Rossellini's own car?).
The film starred Ingrid Bergman (Mrs Rossellini) and George Sanders.
