Evening

I thought I give a small account of my latest purchase of the shed variety. A 2003 Honda Accord 2.0 executive tourer. I was offered it by a friend of my wife's as it was going to the scrap man otherwise. Anyway, its my first foray into the Japanese car side and I thought why not. I collect it tomorrow and will chuck some pictures on of the state of it on arrival. So after going and looking this afternoon, I parted with £100 shiny pounds for a 206k dark blue metallic tourer with a non working clutch! Collection for tomorrow, via trailer. MOT til March next year and demo and one owner from new.

So what else could go wrong?

All back ok other than pulling the front bumper off, sadly. Another job to do then!

Top shedding. My old 2.4 exec from a few years back. I didn't venture into that sort of mileage but one thing to be very weary of is a potential problem I had after 4 years of ownership. It was the only thing that went wrong but be warned. The bulb lighting up the drivers heated seat went leaving me practically stranded in winter struggling with a cold bum trying to find the button biggrin

I don't know if I'll be able to cope if that bulb goes!!!

I will say I've now washed it and it looks a bit better!

i had the same as you colour year everything except mine had the stty wheels But the 2.4 is a bit of a pointless vtec engine i found kicks in too late and wasnt as fun as the 2.2 accord type r

I've never driven the Type R but that was more of a focused tourer than the exec. The ATR has an iconic following whereas the Exec's were just 'warm' versions. I loved the engine in mine. It's the only 4 cylinder car I've owned in about 15 years but I loved the fact you had to drop gears and hang on to every last rev to make it sing. In a world of narrow band TDi's it was the perfect antidote for that type of car. With the right gearing, you could humble more hardcore and powerful machines.

I currently own both funnily enough (a '99 Type R and an '04 2.4 Tourer Exec) and I have to say after spending 3 years with the Type R as my daily driver I have been mightily impressed with the 2.4 engine. It might also be the gearing but to me it just feels completely effortless to drive, whilst still providing more than enough power in any gear- something I never thought I'd experience in a V-Tec engine.

The Type R feels more like a focused hot-hatch, where the 2.4 tourer feels (to me at least) more like a smooth comfy barge- certainly in comparison.

To the OP- that is top top shedding! £100 is an absolute steal, will be following with interest. thumbup

I was initially looking for the 2.0 myself, but ended up getting the 2.4 on the basis that it was in every other aspect the perfect spec I was after (fully loaded exec with sat-nav etc).

Oh and to Toon- the light in the drivers side heated seat button has gone on mine too!

Cheers guys, just had a go at bleeding the clutch with no joy - will have to get a mate round to give me a hand and a bit of advice! Clutch pedal has no resistance to it at the mo so I'm thinking master cylinder as when the pedal is depressed the slave cylinder arm only moves about 10-15mm! Both cars looking good, having never driven a revy engine if I can get it going it'll be an interesting experience for me - normally drive turbo diesels - nice and relaxed, lazy engines. I must say that the engine in this sounds really sweet even with 206K and little history!

Right, a fruitful couple of hours (the last one in the dark!). Bleeding the system made no difference, other than a very much needed fluid change. So to investigate how difficult it'll be to change the master cylinder. Under the dash board I go - oh whats that? Aha - the clutch pedal bracket has snapped on the nearside.

So out with the pedal complete and into the workshop for a bit of dodgy welding!

Replace pedal and still no clutch - bugger. I know I'll pump the clutch and see if that makes a difference.
I now have a driveable car, clutch doesn't feel bad at all.

Now just to reattach the front bumper that some muppet manged to pull off whilst loading the trailer!!(Me, that'll be then!)

Well, today has been spent reattaching the front bumper I pulled off on the trailer. Seems to have gone pretty well, just need to await the arrival of the clips I've ordered to finish it off. I is now usable as is but I'd rather wait for the clips than use it and mess it up again. A couple of photos now it had a quick wash.

I've also hoovered it out quickly to make it look tidier.

A quick update, the trusty Honda is now on the road being used. First trip out and 3.5k revs engine light on, limp mode engaged, bugger. Fault code reader out and plugged in code comes up: P2646 Generic. A rocker arm actuator. Sys perf or stuck off. Bank 1.

Ah well google here I come! Its all pointing towards the Vtec oil pressure sensor, as the oil isn't that old. Que trawling the interweb for a good hour and a half - only seems to be available from Honda. Quick phone call to the local steelers, £76.85! Nearly as much as I paid for the car, st. Ordered through gritted teeth. Meanwhile bypass method in place to keep it out of limp mode! a bit Heath Robinson but working well and still letting the Vtec do its stuff.

Right now to attack the front anti-roll bar bushes (knocking and £12.25 for the pair) - according to the interweb only 20 mins a side! (Well it would be if I'd paid attention to the "Upto 2003" bit). Jack up car O/S wheel off, this should be OK, undo and remove front bolt - now how the heck do I get to the rear bolt? Back onto the interweb - "after removing the front wheel remove the engine mount, then drop the subframe mounting bolt and rotate the subframe to give you clearance to get access to the bolt" - bks to that! Bolt back in, wheel back on. I'll put up with the knocking for a little while longer until I can get access to a lift.

Otherwise all is good so far. Still struggling to find anything not working on the car, other than the rear wiper motor and the air con compressor. As comfortable as you would want, good radio and seemingly running well.

Oh yes I forgot t mention a slight crunch into second gear - sounds like worn syncromesh to me. Just something I'll live with, or 1st to 3rd!
