Driver up for Murder trying to avoid a stinger
Discussion
A van driver has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the deaths of two Leicestershire police officers who were killed in a horrific smash.
The 38-year-old, who is being held at Beaumont Leys police station, is also being held on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The male officers were understood to be attempting to use a stinger device to stop the vehicle after it had been pursued across three counties.
Their marked police car, which was stationary, was wrecked when it was hit by a white Transit van and was engulfed in flames.
The Transit van was left on its side, with its windows smashed, by the side of the A42 at Worthington, in North West Leicestershire.
Flags were being flown at half-mast at police stations across Leicestershire today in tribute to the two officers, who were believed to be stationed at the traffic department at Enderby.
West Midlands police confirmed their officers began pursuing a white transit van in Solihull at 1.19am today.
The pursuit continued across Warwickshire and into Leicestershire.
The crash happened at 1.47am on the northbound A42.
David Saville, chairman of Leicestershire Police Authority, said: "It is sad that we have lost two officers on duty. My thoughts go out to the families and children who have lost their fathers. Thankfully, these kind of deaths are very rare. To lose one is bad but to lose two is even worse."

There was a program about car crime in Manchester recentley. They cornered a stolen car and you could see the look on the thieves face as the police tried to get the keys/get him out. He was going to try anything to get away including ramming officers on foot as he rammed back and fore to make a way out of the police car corden.
Lock em up for a very long time. Complete disregard for human life.

Its a sad fact that there is an almost complete disregard for human life these days from some segments of society. I think it stems from despair, and a sense of worthlessness. Let's face it, if you don't place any value on your own life, because you don't see any future, then you are hardly likely to value anyone else's.
I'm not making excuses - there aren't any. Just trying to understand.
Tragic, for all involved.

couple of thoughts really:
i) What on Earth was the person in the van thinking?? That he'd get away? How? In the entire combined police forces of the UK, there surely isn't a single vehicle that could be evaded by a dodgy old transit. The guy was obviously totally bereft of his senses.
ii) If it's true that this tragedy was finally precipitated by the deployment of a stinger, their use will come under intense scrutiny by the PCA and possibly the courts. Ho hum. Not good. Perhaps I might suggest Stinger missiles instead?

Why aren't these people just shot? Line a few armed plod up in the road instead of a poxy stinger and give them 5 seconds to stop before launching the anti-tank missile. We're becoming too soft in this country
Very sorry to hear about the two officers, who were only trying to do their duty and keep us safe from these kind of people.
Maybe its my vivid imagination but I thought I rememberd something I heard a while ago that the police were looking into. It was basically a tazer for cars which could be fired from the front of a persuing police car and attached its self to the fleeing motorists car, then a huge bolt of electricity would be sent through frying the cars electrics basically imobilising it.
Alternatively as Ted suggested set up a road block, the police have radios to call ahead, and have police marksmen waiting. Take out the driver in a controled and safe way.

Oh my god
I didnt think something that samll could pack so much fire power. One of my freinds used to be a gunsmith and he has fired some very nice guns (mostly hand made shotguns) but never something like that. I hope it never falls into the wrong hands."Take out the driver in a controled and safe way."
Yeah right, but would it be the right driver???
And I'm not joking either. MoJo.
www.binarywaste.com/movies/Glock.avi--nothing new in that although probably the safest place to be (after the first round) would be what he's aiming at!!

Well after it had been pursued across three counties I think they would have a good idea which car/van they were persuing. Hell they could even check the registration number before they opend fire.
