Cayman 981 2.7 Sports Exhaust
Discussion
Hi guys
I have buckled and decided to buy myself an early Christmas/birthday present and get an official Porsche sports exhaust for my car.
Does anyone have any experience with the sports exhaust on the 2.7 model? I've heard and driven the S with it but can't seem to find any videos of the 2.7. Is it a similar noise to a Cayman S?
Regardless I'm pretty excited.
Thanks all.

The wife took delivery of her Cayman 2.7 a few weeks ago and I made 2 contributions to her spec, heated seats and PSE. The exhaust sounds fantastic and really makes the sports car experience complete. I have a 2.7 987 Boxster with PSE and I thought that sounded great until the Cayman arrived. It really is that good.
Enjoy.
Enjoy.
I've had 981 loan caymans as follow
981 2.7 w PSE
981 2.7
981 3.4 s w PSE
And I personally own the Gts.
Out of the loan cars I didn't notice any difference between 3.4 s and 2.7 with PSE in terms of note etc
V a 981 2.7 without PSE, your in for a treat the PSE TRANSFORMS the experience IMO.
Then v the gts the PSE configuration is one on again compare to both the 3.4 s and 2.7 the pops and crackles overrun etc and very epic. It's a big jump again compare to the PSE on the base model eg
Do you have to have an OEM PSE? I'm sure you might get an even more special note going aftermarket or you trying to keep within warranty?

Thanks for the responses.
Glad that you guys seem to think it's going make a difference. I'm seriously excited.
I'm still within warranty so OEM is the only option for a while. I've been quoted just shy of £2k to have it fitted. I've currently got the standard exhaust i.e. no sports tips. I have however managed to get them to swap the standard chrome exhaust tips that come with the PSE for the black ones that come on the GTS I believe. I'm also having the badges changed to matte black for a mini GTS vibe. Can't wait!
What do you all think I should do with my standard exhaust system? Think I could flog it on eBay or something?

Yep - what they said. PSE is a great addition and does make a lot of difference to the whole experience!
Just had it done at my OPC a couple of weeks back. Got them down to £1900 (including the new chrome tips) by playing a few OPCs off each other. The upgrade is worth every penny!
As for selling your old one....I've been looking to do the same and have been tracking some on eBay. They're not moving as people don't need them at the minute. So you can either store it for a couple of years, or call one of a number of second hand Porsche parts dealers. They'll give you a fraction of its worth, but better then scrapping it!

I had PSE retrofitted to a 981 Cayman S and was very pleased with the result. It does include the exhaust button on the console.
I also wondered what to do with the stock system, since nobody needs one yet and I didn't fancy storing it for 5 - 10 years I didn't even get it back from the OPC. I didn't really want to put a bulky, dirty exhaust system inside the car to transport it home either. Seemed a bit wasteful but the amount of hassle involved compared to what I might get for it didn't work out.

I had a PSE fitted to my 2015 Cayman 2.7 by my local Porsche centre 2 weeks ago. I have to admit I'm happy with the sound but surprised that the button inside the car appears to do nothing. I had hoped it would switch between a quiet and loud exhaust sound. There is also a dreadfull drone in the cabin at around 2000rpm.
I have the old silencers but am not sure what I'll do with them because as others have said no 981 is in need of a replacement yet.

Take it back and get it checked out if you hear no sound difference. Unless of course you are driving under 2500rpm all the time. I have the old silencers but am not sure what I'll do with them because as others have said no 981 is in need of a replacement yet.
Understandable that people who have fitted the PSE will need to justify fitting it for £2000!!!!
I have the 2.7 981 Cayman with standard exhaust and everyone says it sounds fantastic outside the car. Don't underestimate whats going on outside the car when you are driving it!
Keep the original on the car and save £2000.
Let someone drive your car past you ripping it along, you will then see the standard exhaust is fine.
Just my opinion of course..... The final choice is yours to make.
Gadgit.

I test drove a 2.7 981 Cayman with PSE, it sounded amazing on the back twisty roads and it seemed quiet when off when mooching along, except when cruising on Motorway at 75 mph, it was beyond terrible, a deep booming sound that was really annoying, I simply could not live with that as around 25-30 miles of my journey to and from work is motorway, completely put me off PSE.
Had mine done for £1670 a good few months ago and could not be happier with it. If anyone can't tell the difference with it on or off they definitely need to get it looked at - it is like night and day.
There is some drone at 70 in 7th on my pdk 2.7 (but then there was with the stock exhaust too). The simple solution to this is to either drive faster, slower or drop into 6th. Any of these cures it instantly - pootling along at very low revs complaining about the noise seems to be missing the point of a Porsche a bit.

Having to alter speed or gear to avoid a headache seems to be missing the point of having a decent car. There is some drone at 70 in 7th on my pdk 2.7 (but then there was with the stock exhaust too). @keiththo - my experience of PSE in a 2.7 Boxster precisely, and why I'd never fit one.
Did you test drive an OPC car with PSE fitted before taking the plunge? Anyone who forks out £1500-2000 before seeing if they like the noise first only has themselves to blame.
No I didn't drive an OPC Cayman but had heard (from the outside) several cars fitted with PSE at Silverstone Classic this year. Clearly this has been an expensive mistake.Did you test drive an OPC car with PSE fitted before taking the plunge? I have driven a Cayman 981S PDK with and without PSE, the one with PSE had a very noticeable drone at motorway speeds, for me it was quite intrusive, loud and had quite a deep resonance. The PSE button made no difference. Dropping into 6th helped but that shouldn't be necessary imo.
Dont get me wrong, PSE sounded amazing under acceleration and down shifts, especially on twisty roads but I couldn't live with it on the motorway.
The non PSE version had a little drone but much quieter on the whole, you still get that lovely flat 6 noise its just not as pronounced.
Make sure you drive one before hand so you know how it sounds in all conditions.
Just my thoughts.
