Judge John Deed!!
Discussion
I think it's a great show. Stretches it a bit with his ex wife, lady friend and daughter in the same court but otherwise a good TV show. Crikey, it's on the BBC too!
Last nights show was good. Last weeks was exciting, but I'm not sure how realistic. The Paedo beater killing someone on CCTV and admitting it, then walking off scot free because the Jury didn't find him guilty of murder which is what he was being tried for etc. Looked like pre-meditated murder to me. Paedo or not, murder is murder.

Tonight's episode has to be among the best drama I've watched in a long time.
The terrifying aspect of it is that it is probably nearer the truth than we feel comfortable admitting to.
How to root out the corruption; that is the real question.
I caught the end of it, and I have to disagree totally I'm afraid. It was a load of old PC bollocks. Of course corruption occurs, we should be in no doubt about that. I feel in this country it operates on a much more subtle level than good ol' fashioned bungs, as popularised by '80s football managers, that we all think about when we think of it. That still happens of course, and always will, it's human nature. An obvious example, of the more insiduous type is of course, the Government's road safety policy, where people are dying because no one can lose face and admit their policy is wrong. At the ground level, as Ken Livingstone has very recently pointed out, everyone is just doing their job, and thus deploying the Auschwitz guard defence. Unfortunately you will never stamp out this type of corruption either, it's human nature too.
But to return to the subject of the programme. The notion that a small scale epidemiological study could prove that the baby's deformity could be linked to the dioxins from the waste disposal plant, is frankly risible. If you want a full scale demolition of the black magic that is epidemiology, go to numberwatch.co.uk and buy one of the excellent books by John Brignell. You'll never watch a programme like this again and keep your dinner down.
That doesn't mean the show is not great entertainment though, just don't rely on it to give you a balanced World view

It's very easy watching - OK I know its scope is limited, but the storyline is the same every week. Some of it (especially the way he rides roughshod over the technicalities of proceedure) is absurd. Also, are we to suppose that the entire Executive has nothing else on its mind than bringing down Judge JD?
Commented before about JJD, however I feel somewhat let down by the PC sensationalist side of things.
Just one objective scientific observation. Yes dioxins and furans do occur both naturally and as byproducts of processes such as incineration.
One large fireworks display releases more dioxins into the atmosphere than a modern incinerator will in a hundred years of operation. The output from the fireworks display is not monitored, incinerators are 100% 24/7 with a live readout feed to the local council environmental dept. Can be checked by public anytime.
OK GF Newman, some dramatic license I accept.

Not that I’m too bothered about the legal niceties of the programme, I just watch it with a glass of wine in my hand and am happy that there is something ok to watch on a Thursday night!

A similar event to this happen in this country. A young lad was killed by a one eyed truck driver with no licence no insurance etc etc. Witnesses claimed he lauaged as he ran over the boy crushing him. After he had served his pathetic sentence the father took a shot gun and shot him, sadly he did not kill him. The jury heard all the eye witness reports saw the evidence and the guy never denied it yet was found not guilty. Probably the last bit of justice we saw.
You are all missing the single most important point, and what to me is the lesson that has to be learnt if there is any hope of salvaging our legal system.
It can be summed up in two words; justice and honour.
Deed is utterly incorruptible; he holds justice above everything else, but his sense of honour holds him to the Law, even when it prejudices honour by virtue of its imperfections.
The imperfections mostly stem not from the Statutes or the principles they uphold, but from the flawed application of the court system.
Within these boundaries, Deed does his absolute utmost to find the truth and therefore implement justice in his court; and he vociferously defends the right to do so.
He recognises that an attack on himself is simultaneously an attack on the principle of justice and an errosion of the court system.
Those of you who see this drama simply as entertainment or a "good yarn" miss a great deal and are the poorer for it.

Agreed!
For example in JJD they have been having a consistent go at the Govt's pressure to get rid of jury trials. Which in case you didn't know is still very much on HM Govt agenda.
Now we can all talk about the imperfections of juries, and indeed (pun unintentional) there are some, but there is an important issue in that juries can return a perverse verdict. By that I mean if a jury finds the law to be unjust they can acquit openly defying the facts and the law. A magistrate or judge are unable to do this.
Therefore one could argue that juries are one just way of safeguarding against the tyranny of an overpowerful State.
Edited to add the following not at all seriously:-
Mind you if the establishment really wanted to clip JJD wings all they have to do is brief old Rumpole and anyone who can stop Judge Bullingham in a charge could sort out Deed riding roughshod over procedure.
That's it off to Jack Pommeroys.......

Ist a very strong drama und makes a valid criticism of the system at present.
Ist contrived to a certain extent - but ist still excellent drama mit valid und pointed message.
But all strong, well written drama ist like this ... plays by Durrenmatt, Frisch, Brecht Goethe, Schiller, Sartre, Camus, Anhouil Pinter, Miller, Rosenthal, George Bernard Shaw, und Shakespeare und a variety of other great novelists, dramatists past und present give a snapshot indictment of society along mit tension und plot.
Our problem ist that today we have dumbed down uind suppressed society which exists for soaps und cheap relaity shows instead of encouraging fine drama.
Ist refreshing to see this kind of high thought provoking drama again - und it may lift out of poitical apathy so that we can protect our society from a tin pot tosspost whose eyes are too close together - un my Mama warned me about men like that!

This show was called "Die Profis" und was dubbed - badly in our country.![]()
It was a shock when I heard his real voice - the voice over they had for the Swiss version was a right "luvvie"
You must sympathise, as you are dubbed badly on here..
