Today has been an odd day. I've not been with it in the slightest, messing up the simplest tasks for no apparent reason. What on earth is going on in my head?

Started at work. Had to do a few pretty simple tests on some equipment at work and made a right pigs ear of it.

We have two sets of equipment that do the same task and normally run together. The tests are to check that the pair of them shut down correctly for a fault affecting both, and that if only one set has a fault, it shuts both down but the other one then auto-restarts after performing some self checks and continues the job on its own. First test, I got permission from the operator, and hit the switch to shut both sets down. Only I hit the wrong switch, which still knocked it off but makes it a pig to reset everything and get it back up and running. Duhh. Not a big problem, but inconvenient and winds the operator up. Second test to put a fault on one set only, again I got permission from the operator, this time to shut down set X. And seconds after joking with a colleague that this time I would hit the right switch, I did indeed shut it down the correct way... Only I had knocked off set Y instead. Again not a massive problem, but a nuisance for the operators and makes me look stupid.

After that I decided to call it a day. Didn't fancy carrying on and risking doing some damage. But driving home this evening, on a road I know well through a village I know well, I came to a pelican crossing. Lights turned red, I stopped, the pedestrians crossed... Then for some dumb reason, once they were off the crossing, I set off. Somehow, in my head, for those few seconds, that crossing had changed from a pelican type (traffic lights) to a zebra (no lights, go as soon as it's clear). I only cottoned on when I noticed the car behind hadn't moved. Double duhhhh. Thankfully there were no police cars about and that one doesn't have cameras, but what a dozy, dozy thing to do.

I got home, driving with extreme caution as by this point I'm properly worried about my mental faculties! Went to defrost some food in the microwave and must have pressed the wrong button on the microwave seven or eight times before finally getting "defrost" rather than "full nuke". I've had the same bloody micro for years, and yet suddenly forgot how to use the thing.

As of now I've decided to do nothing that I can cock up. Sat on the sofa with an iPad and no sharp objects, flammable liquids, mains electricity or hot drinks nearby!

Hands up, all the above clangers are totally my own fault. But I don't normally behave that way. I'm normally pretty switched on and sensible, have a lot of responsibility at work, clean driving licence, etcetera. Something within my brain, somehow, has turned me into a complete bumbling moron today, incapable of doing anything right, losing concentration at the most in opportune moments. Cannot fathom why. I'm not hung over - haven't had a drink since Monday - and nor am I on any drugs, prescription or otherwise. Haven't done anything unusual lately that might affect my brain, and I'm in my early thirties so can't blame it on age!

Any suggestions as to what's causing this? I'm genuinely concerned. Everyone does the odd stupid thing from time to time, but to monumentally cock up so many simple, everyday tasks in one day can't be normal, can it?

Are you tired? Lack of sleep? It's probably nothing. Age?

However, keep an eye on it. My late wife had similar. One morning couldn't speak properly "too much coffee". It was a brain. Tumour. No pain. Glioblasta Multiform. We had 36 months together after that.

But it's probably nothing.

Ps one of my guys had depression and it had similar symptoms.

yikes

Oh man, sorry to hear about your wife Mike. Poor girl. Poor you. Awful thing to happen. Feel bad for dragging the subject up, sorry for that frown

Interesting suggestions though. Tired, perhaps a little bit, thought I had a decent nights' sleep but struggled to wake up this morning so may be something in that. Depression seems quite unlikely - I do occasionally have the odd "low" day where I feel weirdly antisocial, but I put it down to me just being a miserable bad tempered git sometimes biggrin and in any case today wasn't one of those. Was chatting to the lads this morning as normal, no problems with speech or anything. Up until the lapses in concentration at work I'd felt pretty normal and confident that I understood exactly what I was doing. And this evening, in between the traffic light incident and losing the battle of wits with the DeLonghi, my parents popped round and I was chatting away to them whilst building giant Lego towers with my daughter, as usual!

Baffled. Beer and food has eased the worry a bit (beer always helps!) but I'll definitely be keeping tabs on myself, and if I get the same way again I'll be off to see the quack and get my head looked at.

I had various issues at one point, the main one was a "brain fog", was like my mind rebooted and I forgot what I was doing, everything felt like it was at half speed, turned out my Thyroid was a bit wonky, they stuck me on Thyroxine, 100 mg, once a day and I went back to normal.

Don't mess about with it, just see a doctor, no point suffering.

Could be minor strokes or something like that. One thing's for certain though, you need to be getting to the docs ASAP to get checked out.

OP - You managed to write a coherent post and you do not mention having a headache or stiff neck and/or difficulty speaking. Can you hold your arms out straight to the sides and, with your eyes closed bring the tips of your forefingers together at eye level?

It could be daft stuff like a lack of fluids and food.

If you feel pain in the head or neck? If you're worried get yourself of to the quacks.

I read some time ago about biorhythms. I'd previously considered these to be hokum pocum nonsense but it seems there is more to it. From what I recall, we all go through little periods of time where we aren't as sharp as we normally are quite often for no discernible reason.

As above, your ability to write a coherent post suggests nothing untoward.

And as you posted on Friday...how you doing today?

A relative had something similar, turned out she was dehydrated. A bit of time off the alcohol and plenty of water sorted her out.
