What should i spend my 5 Bags on

Right, I am lucky enough that i have £5k ish languishing in my garage in a space that could be taken up by a porker.
This space is next to my '72 beetle and he needs a friend to chat to so i have decided that i want a bit of more modern fun to go with the bug, Yes i know that i should buy and Mx5 but i dont want one.
So i am a little torn, my budget gets me ito a decent usable 944 or an early boxster. I have had use of a ph2 boxster for a weekend in the past but i dont want to stretch my budget to that kind of level, and many moons ago i had a few hours with an early (and quite ratty) 944 S1 but i quite liked it, at the time being 18, it was a porsche, this needs no more explination.
So what should i buy, i really have always wanted to own a 944 for 80's sentimental reasons, but the boxster is tempting at the money...all opinions greatfully recieved

What do we think on the reliabilty front?
Obviously the 944 has a legend of being bullet proof, but they are all knocking on a bit now, even if i could get into a late S2 it would still be knocking on 20 years old, on the flip side the boxster will likeley be high miles and Boxsters have the oil seel issue and an engine buried in the middle that i cant get to.
I am stunningly lazy these days so chances are any spannering will be done by someone else, but its nice know that i could get to things if i needed to.....

If you fancy a convertible, then it's an easy choice. Flat six is a lovely sound, I-4 pretty dull

I'd rather have a good Boxster than a dodgy 944 though. I guess you need to drive a few.
That silver 944 looks nice, rust is always the biggest problem. 968's don't rust (well the bodies don't), but still plenty to go wrong.

How about this as an alternative? A low mileage rare 924 Turbo, looks to be in really nice condition..

Just be careful of rust with 924/944s, though.
They tend to rot from the inside out (sills....!) and they are over 25 years old now.
Don't get me wrong, they're lovely things (I had a Turbo myself) and so popular on the road, but you may end up spending/wasting a lot more than £5K if not careful.

Yep, always had a soft spot for the 968 too. But dude, don't sell yourself short!! A 986 Boxster 3.2 S is within budget and will be a far more thrilling ownership prospect than the 2.7 which reportedly has 'just' enough power to make it interesting.

Right well, looked at 2 944's, both were described as in excellent condition...they were not.
So decided to focus my search on 968 boxsters. I have yet to see a bad one and there seems to be plenty of choice at less than £5k
First drive was a 2.5 tip, wasnt really on my radar, but was very local and looked very clean, 100k fsh, blah blah, in other words it looked too good not to have a look at £3999. It was very clean, but it felt slow, too slow in fact, so as nice as it was, next candidate was a 2.7 S tip as there seems to be a glut of autos around where i am. £4500 asking on this one, FSH, 84k good spec and good condition, drove well, it is still on my radar but the sellar is getting a bit of body work done where the nose cone has taken a little knock, plus it needs a new battery as its been stood for a while.
3rd viewing a 2.5 Manual, 101k, FPSH, bit of rust on the rear arches just starting to appear but very fixable and not very noticale. Very basic car, no climate, but i quite like that...and here is the clincher...£3k. A very sweet drive again, as with the tip lacking a bit in outright perfomance, but being a manual much more workable, could be a very good weekend fun car, sweating the seler out as we speak to see if he weakens on price a bit by the weekend. At this kind of money i am fiding it hard to not buy it. Mich Pilot sports all round, plus the hist, recent clutch, obviously mecahnically very well kept, and used as a daily at present....SO VERY tempting

I really like automatic cars. My last two 3 Series have been autos too and I love them.
But ^what cmoose says, don't buy a Tip. OK, I'll admit to never having driven one, but half the fun of the 986 is the manual box, heel and toeing, throttle blipping, snickety snick fun. A slush box in one just seems like a waste of a car to me unless you have an auto-only license or a disability/mobility issue of some sort. To double the fun add a properly installed short shift kit. Mine's a £40 eBay special but works a treat, and I would never repeat never go back to a standard setup.
WRT "not that fast", TBH they aren't, mines a 2.7 and I still got smoked by a 335d the other day. But that's not the point, it's the feel of the thing (insert all the usual cliches here). Also, you do have to give one the beans to get it to really go. There's a real urgency at the top of the rev range...red line it in second and you are already breaking the motorway speed limit. I would not recommend this sort of behaviour on a test drive, but once it's yours, you will be surprised how fast they are...and how little speed you need to scrub to get round a corner.

Cheers chaps, i hadnt been thinking at all about a tip, I drive an auto every day for convienience not for fun, originally i had thought 2.7S series 1 manual would be my ideal but they seem like slim pickings locally, so i decide just to look at what is avalable locally first and foremost to give myself some idea of the market.
Part of the reason i wouldnt buy one now, is that my 7sp DSG passat Deseasel has such a good auto box that the porker tip feels agricultural in comparison, i have a 45 year old beetle if i want argicultral, but like i said, i decided to have a look at all options, at least so i could say i tried them.
Anyway the search continues, the rusty arched car also had a few other bits and bobs that the seller forgot to mention. I think i could probably push him to under £3k which can not be sniffed at for the keyring judos alone, but not the car for me.
In no rush so i can hold out for the right car

Certainly seems that way to me, think the boat has sailed on the good 944 down at this money.
Something has diverted my attention away from the search so not seen anything for a little while, but to be frank i could have probably bought any of the boxsters i have seen thus far and not been disappointed.
However for me, having driven a few now, its a manual 2.7S that ticks all my boxes.

No such thing mate...if it says Boxster S on the back end it's a 3.2, if it's just Boxster that's a 2.7. The S also has twin pipes, red calipers, and will be a 6 speed if it's a manual. Single pipe, black calipers and 5 speed for a 2.7. It has been heard of 2.7s being "upgraded" to an S with a simple addition to the boot badge!Good luck with the search...
