Winter storage - battery trickle charger

Sure it has been covered before but can't find the link. What models do members recommend for a VXR8 to be left on most of the time, car under cover and will only be used for the occasional dry weekend?. Cheers guys.

Is the optimate the same as the Motorcycle 12v one, got one of them on a bike?

It will do the job..just, I have a bike Optimate on my Monaro. Only 300 milliamps output though so will struggle to charge it. Mine will not even touch the 110AH Land Rover battery which is why I bought the Ctek.

Think I will get a Ctek then the Optimate did seem to get a bit "hot" when I tried it.

CTEK MXS 5.0 every time. I have one of those which I use on both of my cars and it's always been great.

Also recommend a Bosch Silver battery, as they hold their charge for longer when the car is not plugged in.

I use a ctek but I have the bigger one 7.5 or 10 (don't remember) because I use the 'supply' mode when i'm messing with car computer stuff as well. I used to use a 5.0 over winter though and it was fine. I tend to just turn it on for a day or two every couple of weeks instead of leaving it on all the time, don't know if that's bad or not.

I think it is best to leave them on all the time, they go through a sequence and slightly discharges the battery then recharges again and also goes into desulpherisation mode, not sure how it all works.

If the 3600 does the job, then why spend more on the 5.0? Do the features like 'temperature compensation' actually make any difference or just gimmicks?

I like the idea of the 12v supply which can be used to keep 12v attached to the car while changing the battery
