The small black tube that comes out of the top of the plenum is broken. Can this stop the car from starting and what is it please chaps?

it is the vacuum advance from the distributor, it shouldn't prevent a start, what are the symptoms of your non start?

fuel pump primes, turn the key and nothing. I have recently changed the battery and relays. I am not a mechanic. Last year i was due to take it to St Ives and the clutch master cylinder went. Guess where I am due to go tomorrow? I dont think it likes Cornwall biggrin

The battery needs at least 12.6v to be good enough to start it. If it is then you need to check for 12v on the small wire at the starter motor when turning the key to the start position. Once you know if there is 12v or not will decide what steps to take next.

if you get "nothing" when turning the key it is probably one of a few scenarios :-

1. Dead battery - check charge level

2. Duff ignition switch (electronic part - not the key barrel part)

3 Classic immobiliser issue (usually called the hot start issue) - lots of threads on this so wont repeat too much just search for hot start and you will get all the info needed

4. Duff starter motor/solenoid or the wiring to it, including faulty main supply cable/earth or plain bad/corroded connections

do you have power to everything else, lights blowers windows etc ?

if so try giving the passenger side dash (underside by the tunnel) a good couple of thumps whilst also turning the key to the start position, if starter springs to life you have an immobiliser issue and will need it fixing/bypassing.

if no joy with that, put car in 3rd and push car back and forth a few times, if the starter is stuck this may free it to allow starting once again (take out of gear before attempting to start obviously!)

if still no joy, you'll need to get a multimeter out and start checking the solenoid wire at the starter goes live when cranking and the ignition switch for the same.

that should keep you busy for a while, keep us updated....

If you mean "nothing", not even the faintest whirr, when trying to start, then it is more likely to be an immobiliser problem than a battery problem, as even my Audi with a pancake flat battery gave a little grunt yesterday.

The priming fuel pump suggests that at least a part of the immobiliser is fine, which leads more to starter/starter solenoid issues

Did you try the simple thing of locking and unlocking the car?

Also, do just check your battery terminals are tight. A loose terminal could allow enough for the pump to pass, but not enough to crank the starter.

Thanks chaps.
I am a spanner with a spanner biggrin an auto electrician is coming in the morning. He thinks it is the ignition part of immobiliser.

FYI, access to the required electricals will need at least the dash top removing & possibly the radio out, you may want to get that done before the auto electrician gets there to save time/money etc.

Not difficult when you know how, but the first time round can cause a few issues....

basic guide HERE

10mm ratchet spanner helps a lot, worth replacing the nuts with wing nuts or use velcro to secure the dash top down when refitting as it makes further access if required much easier.
