Decided that to do the pics from the new 20d justice i needed a new photo printer. After a bit of research i went for the Canon. Having spent a while setting up the colour profiles with photoshop, i have to say the results are nothing short of staggering!
Amazingly it rattled off an A3 borderless print in about 2 minutes. To my eyes it looks as good, if not better than anythng you would get from a specialist print company.
10/10 from me
Actually following on from the Epson CF storage gadget and Motorola phone, maybe we need a gadget thread. I'm a compulsive purchaser of anything photography, hi-fi, home cinema, remote controlled related, and love looking at peoples new toys

Oh - good. Been close to getting a deal on an i905D this week, just keep missing out.
Generally the Canon seem about the best on the market at the moment unless anyone has other news?
I'd previously been using an Epson 1290, but it really can't hold a candle to the Canon, colours are natural. Probably down to the new 8 colour ink system they use?
Arse.
I'm just about to come home, have a full box of personal possessions and can get one of these buggers for 290 quid in Japan, but not in the personal possessions box! Might see about posting myself one.
Note that the i905D isn't the same (unless model numbers are now way out whack). It only does A4 and I think only has the 6 ink system.

My dad has got the a4 version of your printer, I forget the model name.
It's the first time i've ever been REALLY impressed with an inkjet print. Finally the saturation was properly as it should be, and the detail was pretty exceptional too. I think the printer only costs £130, but to get the best results you want to use the Canon Photo Paper Pro, which is expensive, and I would guess that the pigments are dear too

The true A4 version of the i9950 (i.e. 8 ink system) is the Pixma 8600, a new (ish - much squarer, more modern looking) printer in the Canon range and I would expect it to cost more than 130 quid, but would be pleasantly surprised if not.
The old version of this printer (which I think has 6 inks) is the 960 or something.
If you have a search on the "photography on the net" Canon forums, a number of people have posted noting that the Canon papers are not necessarily the best for these printers.
I believe Kodak and Konica papers get favourable comments. But I could be wrong (on this and the exact model numbers of printers!).
Still debating buying one and shipping it back!

Go on! You know you want to.
I'll echo the comments about the Canon Pro paper. It gives better results than the Kodak and Epson paper that i'd been using with the 1290.
Inks aren't cheap. replacements are £5.99 each on the web, but the fact that each can be replaced individually should save compared to the ones i used previously. I've also ordered some compatible ink for £1.95! I'll let you know if it's any good..........

yes that's the one. It's black and a lot bigger than the previous printers. Has 8 colour pigment dyes I seem to remember
I recently upgraded from a Stylus 1290 to a Canon i9950 too. I always thought it'd be difficult to beat the quality from the Epson, but this does. Not by a huge margin however.
What is amazing is the speed, highest quality 7x5 in about 1 min, and 19x13in in about 2.5mins. My stylus took 30mins for a 19x13!

130 quid!
Shit. That's cheap.
Stuh - stop it. No idea how long I'm back for. I have another pretty expensive purchase to sort out next week and I'm convinced Canon are going to upgrade the 9950 (if only in looks and paper handling).
At 130 quid for the Pixma 8600 though, I'm starting to scratch my chin at just how often I'd print A3...
And then I think to myself, this is the third time in about a week I've not bought a gadget because of common sense. Which makes me feel I'm losing the plot.
Having seen the output from both these printers, the quality is outstanding (just to get it back on topic a tad).

Your worried! I think i need gadget addiction counselling
Brought new DV camera this weekend and currently browsing the web for a car mount (any one got any good suggestons BTW?) and the Matrox RT100 extreme accelerator....................where will it all end
Oh, and you HAVE to go A3, just so you can fiddle around and waste more ink

Unbelievable isn't it! I used to go and have lunch whilst the 1290 was doing an A3 print
So not only is the 9950 about 10 times quicker, i'll lose a few pount due to less snacking.............stuh said:

Car mount - search the web for b-hague (think they're www.b-hague.co.uk). Best you can get at sensible cash.
I have one of theirs which you can have when I get back if I can find it, but it's a clamp sort (they do the sucker sort - clamp sort would only really go on a headrest post in the 355).
However, what you want is an RFConcepts bullet camera set up. Much better and easier to mount with zero damage.
You then should quit buying cards for your bloody PC and buy a Mac. They are FAR superior to the PC for anything remotely fun.
I've decided to hold on the printer (I think), though might have to meet up with you when I get back to the UK so you can show me a print done via Pictbridge from the 1DmkII of some cars
Sorry for the thread hijack to everyone else!
