Winter storage
Discussion
Hey all,
I'm having to move back up north to Aberdeen from London for work. I've managed to rent a farm house with a double garage and will be garaging the DBS until April ish or until all the salt is off the roads. I saw what driving my old V8 Vantage through two Aberdeen winters did to it and there's no way I'm doing that again!
Anyway.......I've never rested a car up for so long, what should I be doing to keep her in tip top condition over the winter?
Cheers

If you look on the Scotland forum, I asked about long term storage near Aberdeen yesterday. I was contacted by PM by the guy running the place, it looks like a cracking facility. Why not let somebody else look after it in a Carcoon? Prices are very reasonable I thought. I'm having to move back up north to Aberdeen from London for work. Hey Bravo,
Thanks, never seen that abbreviation before, had to google it! I'll have a look at the manual but being a stereotypical male I don't usually bother with those trivial things :-) I used to have a mk3 mondeo and the sunroof got stuck open, I got so annoyed with it I punched it and broke some clips. Spent a small fortune getting a new sunroof fitted. A year later I bought my st220 and was reading the manual and found a paragraph mentioning that sometimes sunroofs 'forget' how to close and there's a specific proceedure to go through to get them working again, whoops!
Pete,
When I bought my v8 it was in tip top condition. It was my daily driver and driving it for a couple of years in Aberdeen and looking after it I had to have all of the non chromed metal on the outside replaced due to rust, some more than once. Luckly I managed to get new wing mirror mounts on warranty but was astonished on how quickly they corroded. One sunny day in winter I looked at the car and could see through the back wheel to the subframe and saw all the surface rust that was bubbling up and just thought that I didn't want to have to deal with the reprocussions so p/x'd it's for an Evora. the Evora was a great car but still regret selling the v8. I missed the noise so much I had a C63 coupe within a year!

I'm
Thanks for the info but I've a whole bunch of little things to do to the car over the winter so would prefer to have it easily accessible, that's why I've rented a place with a double garage. When I phoned the solicitor to make initial enquiries she said it was a perfect family home, I must have a family. Nope, just need to garage 2 cars :-)

I have done this twice now and if you can connect a trickle charger you will be able to avoid most of the problems of long term storage. The tyres will develop flat spots but with modern tyres this will dissipate once they are warmed up. The mechanics are very robust. The last time I did it, once started I took the car on a 500 mile journey without problems. So I would not worry.
Without a trickle charger I would recommend buying a jump starter pack. Leave the windows slightly open and the passenger seat pushed forward to allow access to the battery if there is no power. Much better than dealing with the damage caused by driving during the winter.....

It may seem odd but, bearing in mind the rented farm house bit, I'd put a few traps around the garage for rodents too! Also worth checking the garage for any access points for the little creatures.
We live on the edge of a rural village in the East Midlands and our CL had a minor attack last winter, just in the three weeks we were away. Lightly gnawed cables, severed windscreen washer hose and a small nest under the ECU. All whilst parked in a double garage attached to our house, a modern brick built place.
Fortunate to get away with so little damage, unlike the other car in at the same time - an E-class with damage to the loom and fibre optics and a bill for £5k....
