ok i`m looking at buying a road angel to try and save me from the yellow nasties i was just wondering if this is the best device in its price range?
are the additional laser sensors worth it or just a sales gimmick?
also what is the legality of a laser sensor not jammer?
cheers

I like mine and use it all the time. GPS speed reading is more accurate than my Mondeo's speedo so I just set cruise control to speed limit on Roady and just cruise slightly over stated speed on cars speedo. Never mor than 10% plus 3, I take the big risk with the extra 1%.... I drive a lot in unfamiliar towms and the fixed camera warnings help. I don't drive fast but the warnings make me more aware.

I have two laser detectors, front & rear, they've gone off several times in various circumstances but thankfully no letters or stops yet. The detectors don't tell you when you are targeted, but if whoever is doing the targetting thinks you are speeding they pull the trigger, thats when the Roady goes nuts. Brake hard regardless. Big debate on whether it's too late or not, maybe I've just been lucky.

Some people on here think they are a waste of time (you know who you are!!) but I like mine. Also you can output GPS data to a Laptop and use it with mapping software to pinpoint where you are if you are lost in Glasgow. I always get lost in Glasgow.

I'd get the Road Angel Classic, slightly cheaper and lower profile. Also if this crazy government bans the laser part you can still use it. Also the New Road Angel is too bright blue on the dash at night for me.

Laser jammer? I'd love one, too expensive and I'm not brave enough.

Why are there still numerous 'detector' devices up and running in cars that i've stopped for speeding when using a pro-laser

I've counted over a dozen that I can remember...

Because lasers don't reflect around that much or difract in the way that radar does, so generally if your detector pics up a beam its because you have just been caught.

Only thing that works is the jammers, but we all know they are a tad borderline at the moment, and about to become totally illegal.

If the law wasn't about to change I'd be inclined to get a jammer and take my chances, but its pretty silly if they are expressly illegal.

As to the Road Angel being the best, I'm not convinced really. It has to go on the dash having no remote aerial which personally I don't like. Origin blue i is a good piece of kit, but the company are bastards (if you renew after your sub has lapsed, they backdate your payment for the period you were lapsed, even though they didn't let you download updates during that time. Sharp practise or what?). The Roadpilot micro looks good too.

Hi SC

There are different types of detectors, you know that. The ones that do detect Pro-Laser, like the RA, shouldn't be used as insurance against being spotted, targetted, and ultimatly stopped. If you are going to speed, excessively, then you run the risk of being stopped or scammed. No detector is going to protect you in these circumstances, although they might give you those vital milliseconds to slow down enough, who knows.

As I've said, I firmly believe my RA has made me more aware of my speed and surroundings, maybe we should just agree to disagree on there perceived usefulness.

Not really relevant to the thread but your not the only one. I had to go in a rescue someone last week who was so lost they could only give me the street name, they had no map and had gone in on directions given to them by another driver. He had done everything as instructed... 4 junctions too early

thanks DanH and Hamster...

My department has 'speedar' radar guns..but they are rarely used. The 'pro-laser' is the weapon of choice and with between 1 and 3 seconds to lock onto a vehicle it's very quick, very accurate, very specific and has a range upto 2000ft.

Of course there are alternatives to detection, and this lady has some ideas:

So, with this do you stop 'em there and then on foot, or do you chase them and stop, or radio ahead and get another BiB to stop. Or, more to the point can you pick people off and send the dreaded letter afterwards.

Now tell me I'm not paranoid!!
