Hi guys looking to get some winter tyres for the M4 and having a bit of trouble. I know getting a set of smaller wheels/tyres would be ideal but don't really want to fork out a couple of grand if I can avoid it. Was looking at pirelli winter sottozeros which are the only tyres i can get a hold of that fit the 275 rears and the front 255s (heard nokians were better but can't get them in the 275s). Was on speaking to someone at black circles who said they only recommend fitting them on Aston martins for some reason but surely if they're the right size then that shouldn't make much difference? Any advice would be really appreciated, cheers in advance! Mitch

Try Oponeo they were recommended on here a lot and i used them as they seem to specialise in winters and the prices last year were excellent.

I would revisit investing in smaller 18' rims for a variety of reasons:
- buy them second hand (18 are the std size for M3/M4 in most European markets so should be able to source them cheaply as people "upgrade") and they will retain their value.
- smaller wheels will perform better, higher sidewallS so better traction, skinnier tyres normally better for winter, including water dispersion.
- save the cost of swapping tyres twice a year (£100) and no risk of rim damage.
- swap the rims at home no need to rely on anyone.
- save your summer rims from salt, hidden kerb impact etc etc

Mitch

I would definitely go for a set of winter wheels and tyres. I bought a set for my E60 M5 four years ago from main dealer.
Cost me C£1900 but I put them on at the end of November each year and generally take them off in early March.
They will be going on in a couple of weeks and the tyres will see me through this winter so if you look at it that way they have cost me less than £400 each year and less wear and tear on my best rims.

Also bear in mind that you can sell on the wheel and tyres when you change model. I have always got very good prices for winter wheels and tyres so that the actual cost of ownership of the wheels is reasonable and is well worth it. This year it will also allow me to send of a stupidly kerb end 19" for a high quality refurb.

i bought a full set of wheels and tyres for my F80 M3. will fit them at the end of the month. got them for a good price from Germany. shipped directly to my tyre people who charge me £35pa to store but are cheap as chips to swap over. given your preserving your 'summer' tyres and can sell the wheels when you are done with the car the NET cost is actually very low. besides. why are we talking about cost when it actually keeps your car on the road during the one or two impossible weeks that we inevitably get and for the rest of the season you are less likely to crash causing damage, injury or worse.
As Kevin Bacon says... "its a no brainer"

FYI i had an Audi Quattro (S3) before the M3 and that was equally useless on ice, all cars brake with four wheels and if your rubber isnt gripping you aint gonna stop!

Gareth, did you get a set of OEM wheels form Germany or aftermarket ? If it was aftermarket, would be interested in which ones you went for, cheapest I can get the OEM wheel package is £2150 in the UK.

I looked on eBay and got a brand new set of wheels and tyres from Germany took the tyres off and sold them for more than the winters cost. The wheels and tyres cost less than the wheels alone from a dealer here.
