Fantastic video ??https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-4MtZI6XGY
Surprised by the lack of love for the 993 & 996 (thought they were supposed to be fabulous cars, yet dismissed relatively easily).
Personally, I'd love to own (or just drive) any of them, but would be the 4.0 for me... Or the 2.7.... Depending on the moment I had to make the choice.
For me it's the 2.7 RS, as it was built specifically for racing and elevated the 911 to 'iconic' status.
I had the opportunity to drive one, three years ago, and it didn't disappoint. Yes, it's now 40+ years old, and some aspects are a bit 'vintage' - but the engine, chassis and lightness, still make it an absolute gem.

...for a start a review by any two enthusiasts can always through up different answers - everyone on this forum has different favourites, etc
...but also, I found it a bit simplistic here. For instance you could tell the 996 RS guy just didn't like the physical look of the car, prettiness, front lights, etc...after that everything was not great for him. He mentioned that the other reviewer thought the 996 RS would be the winner...so it is a personal view of that one reviewer. The power difference between a well performing 996 RS and 997 RS is only about 10bhp at most (I have dyno'd them on the same dyno and same day)..so again he was already convinced. (Anyway, also possible his one was not performing well which I've had with non-working cam sensors depleting 40-50 odd hp at the upper revs which is not all that noticeable)
But anyway, there is not a right answer to this type of review and I'm sure each variant is a winner for someone.
Completely agree with the above but I also agree with the final verdict. The 997 GT3 RS 4.0 is a hell of a car. I am fortunate to own both a 4.0 and the new 991 GT3 RS and they are right when they say that the 991 is the playstation car here. It is super competent but it is easy to drive (even my wife likes to drive it). That cannot be said about the 4.0. The thing is a beats and I also think it has the prettiest back end of all of them. If I had the simple choice of paying +200k for a 991 GT3 RS or +400 for the 4.0 i would save a little longer and go for the 4.0. It is truly epic.

Did you drive the 997.2 RS - if so , how would you compare the 4.0 to that ?
Yes I had a 3.8 as well and it is exactly as one of the guys says. There is not 200k difference between the 3.8 and the 4.0 BUT the 4.0 is a little (tiny) bit better in certain small areas which combined makes this a very special car. Porsche did not make any money on the 4.0 because they basically threw the kitchen sink at it in order to be able to improve it vs the 3.8. The track was changed. The front wheel arches were widened slightly to accommodate for the wider track and they were made in carbon fibre with an integrated lip to allow the wheel to turn freely. On other GT3 RS (the 993) it was simply bolted on with rivets). They added the small winglets for more downforce. They tweaked the engine to its max and the slight improvement in rev range makes all the difference when driving around Goodwood for example, because when coming on to the Lavant straight you can stay in 4th where the 3.8 hits the rev limiter and you will have to change up to 5th gear. It also has a firmer front-end grip so turning in is sharper (not as crazy sharp as with the 991) but still noticeable sharper than with the 3.8. And the noise is epic after hitting 4000 rpm.
Here is a picture on a day where I was lucky enough to have Goodwood for myself with two other drivers.

Is the front track really different between the 3.8 and 4.0? I had read that here before and had looked around a bit for anything official on that but could not see that either being mentioned and what numbers I had found seem to suggest identical front track numbers for both cars - 1509mm. Edit: pdf product launch file for the 991RS from Porsch seems to suggest the same 1509mm front track numbers. Would scan a picture if i knew how but on a mobile device now..

996 Still the car for me. If only the 4.0 didn't have PASM and ABD...
They are all lovely cars and each a winner....ultimately depends on how/where you use the car. From the water-cooled bunch, if predominantly on the road then the latter version are more comfortable and refined. If however you are looking for max driver feedback, involvement, and purity then agree with Steve above ref 996. (I am not that well acquainted with the air-cooled cars so don't know how much better they would be, and also I ignore the values/investment potential aspect in the above)
