997 turbo boost problem
Discussion
Hi everyone, my 997 turbo 2010 pdk has a boost problem. Noticed it this morning after refueling.
Basically the first thing i noticed was the exhaust being louder than normsl in normal driving conditions, almost as though sport chrono is switched on even though it isnt.
Then i noticed the car boosting much later, at arounf 5000rpm with boost cutting in and out. It now wont boost at all and is very sluggish.
Any ideas before i drive 2 hours to my local dealership?
Cheers

Check your VTG rods; one on each turbo, they should connect the adjuster to the turbo (if they seize or pop off the symptoms you describe happen). Switch the ignition on then off, the adjusters should do a sweep / make a noise - if only one makes a noise the adjuster has probably failed - if a rod has popped off, the noise will still occur but the VTG element will be stuck in one position.
The VTG element controls boost - there are no conventional wastegate valves as on 996 so a failure here will result in strange boost levels and eventually a check engine MIL

What boost are you achieving on the boost digital display?Basically the first thing i noticed was the exhaust being louder than normsl in normal driving conditions, almost as though sport chrono is switched on even though it isnt.

If it only goes up to 0.5 bar, it is either a seized actuator rod, or a seized actuator.
Thus is a common problem on the gen 2 turbos
This is how you test the actuator rods-
