Are you connecting via USB or firewire?

To capture video from your GR-DVP1E, you must connect through firewire...

Best practices:

1. Hook up firewire (IEEE1394) to your computer and cam
2. Power on the cam in "VCR MODE"
3. XP should find it, and even offer you a default application to select (Choose Windows Movie Maker if it is offered)
4. If Windows MM is not offered, launch it.
5. Use the capture feature in Windows Movie Maker (and I recommend DV-AVI import as your computer spec will probably do it without a stutter).

USB mode is generally only for still photo import. It basically views your camera as a removal media device (eg USB storage device).

If this doesn't help, post back and we can try some other tricks...

It's Apple Computer's name for the IEEE 1394 serial interface. It uses an absolutely minute 4pin or 6pin plug/socket. Sony give it their own name (which I forget, having no Sony kit.)

http://developer.apple.com/devicedrivers/firewire/index.html

Despite being an Apple invention, it has become the de facto standard for transferring video between digital camcorders and computers of any make - my HP came with a Firewire interface as standard, and you can buy interface cards.

Maser...

You also have to have the firewire port on your PC (you should if you are running XP). There are two types of firewire cables. Usually, for cameras, you need the one that is small at one end and large at the other (keeping it simple)...

After you get that, go back to my "best practices" above...

Why not USB2?

Its just as fast as firewire.

What happens when you plug in the firewire cable and then put your camera in "vcr mode" (play video mode)?

===

Why firewire? True USB is just as fast, however, for most cameras firewire is faster (especially cameras that may be a few years old) because the cameras are only setup to transfer USB via the 1.1 protocal...

...also, most video editing programs are set up to use firewire...

According to the manual for the GR-DVP3 (which I found at JVC's site), switching from still mode to video mode while hooked up to the PC will cause "issues".

Just start with NO programs running, plug in your turned off camera (via firewire ONLY - USB and Firewire should NOT be connected at the same time), and then go immediately to TAPE PLAY MODE on the camera...

One other thing to check is the Windows XP service pack 2 issue for firewire (assuming you have service pack 2):

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885222

I would also check to make sure that the drivers are properly loaded for your firewire port (maybe have a rummage inside control panel>system>device manager just to make sure windows sees them.

If you are powering on your camera, and Windows doesn't find it, I would assume that there is probably a firewire issue...

(BTW - I, traditionally, use Sony cameras. One of the benefits is Windows seems to have very few problems with these cameras and a firewire DV link)

No worries, mate, we've all been there...

...anyway, now I need more info on your PC. Is it a name brand/model number?

...have you tried activating the "add hardware" wizard in the control panel (just for giggles in case it might pick up the firewire - if it says it can't find anything new, just press cancel at the end of the wizard...)

(I'm starting to think that somehow the firewire port got turned off in your BIOS, but we will defer that thought for a moment...)

Chin Up...

I'm going to see if I can find an emachines manual. Is your mate any good with PC's? If he is, habe him check in the BIOS - peripherals(usually) to make sure that the firewire is turned on...

I shall rummage and post back tomorrow...
