Normally when you're shopping you tend to have a general idea of how much stuff costs - it's pretty rare that I'm properly surprised by something that's really expensive / cheap. However, I thought it might be fun to get a stone tumbler and make nice polished stones / minerals. We can go on rock hunting expeditions with the kids and watch as they come up all nicely. Shouldn't be too expensive - it's just a plastic drum on an electric motor after all...

One hundred and twenty three pounds!

You don't even get the plastic drum. How the hell does it cost that much money?

What else have you been surprised by?

Honey - I like a bit of honey on my toast sometimes, I was looking in the supermarket the other day, a standard Supermarket, not a Fortum's or even a Waitrose, no it was Sainsbury's - SEVENTEEN QUID for a jar of 'special honey' - It had better work like spinach on Popeye for me to cost that much.

On the plus side they sell Saffron for a quid which is a bargain!

Manuka Honey. They only make 1700tonnes of genuine Manuka each year, as the pollen comes from uncultivated trees and you can't force the bees to forage exclusively from mānuka flowers. The UK sells 1800tonnes a year, so most of the stuff on the counters isn't even authentic.

Honey in supermarkets is really expensive, even for the cheap stuff. Try going to Costco - you'll get 10 times as much for only twice the price.

Similarly, my local WHSmith has started selling "American Candy" and a tiny bag of Pretzel M&Ms is £1.50

The American stuff like this is always overpriced - Lucky Charms, Cap'n Crunch, Marshmallow Fluff..

Lucky Charms are £7.50-odd in Selfridges, yet my mom works at TK Maxx and they occasionally have boxes in for around £3..

Crisps - £2 a large bag (enough for one).

It's just a sliced potato for goodness sake. Just look how much chips you get for £2 for comparison.

Any rare single purpose tool.

I'm a watchmaker and anything that has an obscure job that isn't often needed these days is ridiculous if you want to buy it new- a pair of special tweezers for forming the overcoil on a hairspring are easily worth over £100 even if 60 years old. I can't even find a price for new ones, but even common antique tools you can buy for ~£100-200 are frequently close to a grand or two brand new. It doesn't help that the Swiss make a lot of them.

The problem for manufacturers is that so few people buy them (and buy them only once) that they can't recoup the costs by just churning out thousands of them as they won't sell, they can't drop the quality because the tool needs to be a certain standard to be of any use, so the tooling costs are spread quite thickly onto the products.

Optical measuring equipment, too. All it is is a lens with an x/y table underneath it, but make it a great lens with a great x/y table and suddenly the cost goes through the roof.

In fact any kind of fine measuring equipment just seems to be a ridiculous amount of money.
