Been busy this weekend.

Sold my '00 750i last friday, which I really regret already, lots of expensive stuff to fix on it however, but I got my money back, but finding another one with the same equipment will be impossible.

Bought a '00 523i a month back to have as a daily/winter, sold that this sunday, but before selling that I bought (or stole, depends on who you ask biggrin ) a '01 530i manual, Imola II over black leather, a few issued on it tho, bubbling on every panel and p0014 code (camshaft sensor) ordered parts already and apparently even a spanner like me will be able to change them.

So from this:

To this:

To that:

All in one weekend.

Sad news on the 750 but the 530 looks a worthy replacement! What's the long term plan for this one?

I've been contemplating downsizing too but to a 540, the Sports are beginning to hold/build their value now though!

I've been looking at 540 sports too. Seem to be holding prices at around £5k now.

Great looking E39, with probably the most balanced engine in the lineup. How on earth is there so much rust, though? What is the plan of attack, particularly with the awkward bits like the rear arches?

Yup, regret is massive, but before letting it go I told the new owner, that is somewhat local that if he ever sells it, to call me first.

I would not sell a 540 sport if I had one either, getting very rare on the ground now.

It's not that rusty, but there is bubbling on the front of the bonnet at one corner, 3 doors, rear passenger one being the worst, and just behind the rear wheels where the bumper meets the body.

Plan of attack is to drive over the winter, and keep the car as clean and as free of salt as possible and then try to fix the rust myself in the spring, re-spray the car will easily cost as much as I paid for the entire car. But it's a 99% rust free car, and it looks just fine unless you look for the bubbles.

Camshaft sensors will get fixed in about an hour by a friend who isn't as hamfisted as I am, so hopefully the engine will be back to full strenght, the 523 I sold on sunday just drove away from this one...

Salt and grit is the main reason for rust in Sweden, and we have really crappy weather from november to march with plenty of salt and grit on the road, it's murder for cars, old ones especially so.

Edit: Camshaft sensors changed for new BMW OEM units sourced from the dealership at £192 made absolutely nil difference what so ever to the cars performance. Wonder if the vanos seals are toast, will likely have to get the car down to the local dealership and let them read the computers to see whats wrong with it.
