I just thought it felt like a fast euro box when I drove one and really didn't get on with the short shifter which I thought a bit of a gimmick, but then I drive a Defender as a daily and prefer old cars so I'm not right in the head anyway
I'm with you. Drove one a few years back and couldn't see the attraction. I didn't dislike it, just didn't find it all that engaging... Couldn't wait to get back in my 964
The Cayman R is an outstanding drivers car I have had 12 Porsche even as far back as a 3.2 careera and yes 2 Gt3s in that lot as well and the R is the best drivers car by far and handles way better on the road than any other Porsche I have owned.
What other Porsche can you buy for the R money that is this good.
All you need in the R is Manuel box bucket seats light weight wheels PSE Sport chrono perfect.

Ha, saw your add, it sounds nice, what's the replacement then, a GT4 ? You fancy a deal then with a lovely Caterham R. It run rings like these above cars ????Oh, and did I mention in have one forsale in the classifieds with that very spec and more

They could barely give these things away when they were new... faint media praise and lack of any worthwhile power hike made it a hard sell... OPC's were literally throwing 24/48hr tests in their demo R's to almost anyone who'd ever stepped into their premises !
Not sure what the fuss about them is... after 2 days I couldnt wait to get back in my 996.

no cars were selling in the worse of the recession ! but the R still won auto cars drivers car of the year beating the GT3 and the RS the year later.
Bring out an R now and it would be fetching 20k overs !!!
It was late 2011 already... worst of recession was well over !Bring out an R now and it would be fetching 20k overs !!!
Many in the media (incl. Harris iirc) thought it was unworthy of the R badge which had been resurrected for a lightly warmed over cayman.
It was very quick with pdk tho... 4.0s to 60mph and 9.8s to 100mph.
I was totally underwhelmed when I had one for a couple of days, but then I don't fit in the 987's, lack of legroom, so that probably overshadowed the experience?
Been a few years apart, but my 981 CS doesn't seem that far removed - my driving skill set is obviously not 'nuanced' enough to tell.

I very much doubt it! Is the 981 Gts fetching £20 k overs?
They still would struggle to sell new and be worth only 66% of original cost after 4 years
the GTs is pants though(not pants but you get my drift), hence why the R won this road test vs it !They still would struggle to sell new and be worth only 66% of original cost after 4 years
For some reason people got hung up on the R name, which is a shame for people who missed out on a future classic.
