Porsche Museum, Stuttgart

Is it worth a visit? It's sometimes hard to tell how well done and enjoyable these sort of places really are from website.

To explain, I have a job coming up in Munich where' I will be busy Saturday, but should (if all goes to plan) have all Sunday free, then working again on Monday. Last time we were working out there we went to the BMW World, which was pretty good TBH, but this time we're thinking Porsche, but there's a decent train journey each way.

Just trying to balance up whether it's worth the effort, or if a better use of time would be to drink more on the Saturday night and use Sunday to get over it. When in Rome and all that.

The Porsche Museum is well worth a visit , the MB is far better imho.

They are about 6 miles apart both close to train stations.

We were there as part of the Octoberfest and visited the Porsche on the Saturday morning and got straight in no bother , we visited the MB museum which was walking distance from our hotel on the Sunday morning and got in within a few minutes but as we were leaving the queue was horrendous and probably the best part of an hour to get in.

ok, have looked at the pics. anything pre-1990 seems interesting. WTF happened to MB since then?

For cars, the Porsche museum is best IMHO

For MB and motoring history, MB is best.

My preference would be the former.

I don't do a lot of museums, but I really enjoyed the Porsche one! They do a great job with keeping the exhibition fresh, so well worth a visit imho.

Had a thoroughly good time when we went last year. The MB museum is much larger and would probably need half a day at least to get the most out of. Porsche's can be done in a few hours. The best part for me was the opportunity to rent a car - took a Boxster GTS.

I visited both Porsche and Mercedes museums this year. Out of the two Mercedes is the better museum, much more to see and interesting context put around the cars.
However, you can't go to Stuttgart and not visit Porsche.

Thanks for all the replies. Four hours on a train seems a lot on a Sunday, but this thread has reassured me!

Saw a few cars out the front of the museum including a GT3 , but to be fair I didn't have my driving license with me and time was running tight anyway , but the traffic coming into Stuttgart for the Octoberfest probably meant you would have spent most of your time in a traffic jam anyway.

Yes its a good museum sits on one side of the Porsche roundabout on the other sides is the worlds largest Porsche dealer and opposite that is the Factory.
The factory visit is without doubt the most memorable thing to do in Stuttgart that's if you are a car/Porsche fan. It starts from the museum but you need to book well in advance. The production line builds all 911 variants and also the Boxter. They all go down the line in every variation and you see most of the processes of the build. If you love Porsche then there will be nothing more interesting.

Don't think that Porsche dealer is the biggest in the world, heard that was in Capetown South Africa .

The website is a bit oblique with regard to the factory tours; how long do they last?

My only concern is the amount of time we have, given 2hrs train journey each way from Munich and the need to be rested on Sunday night in preparation for working 7 days straight.

You apply online for the tour, they are well booked out and last two hours plus you need to be there 30 mins in advance . Cost is €6 appx with a good reduction for Porsche Club Members.
