2006 Cayman s

This morning I checked my engine oil level before starting. It was at 3/4 level as it has been for the last month.

Anyway this morning I pulled out of a junction and had to accelerate hard to avoid a collision. My fault entirely. Hands up I made a mistake. Anyway I floored it in 1st (thank you psm for saving me).

Anyway while accelerating the check oil level warning message came up saying I had 3/4 oil level.

Why did this message come up. It disappeared when I cancelled the message off the display. No other messages have come up and after leaving the car for 45 mins I went out and checked the oil level again it's still at 3/4.

I realise as you accelerate the oil moves back in the sump but surely you shouldn't be able to trip a warning just by accelerating hard.. I am now wondering if the oil level gauge is functioning correctly.

06 has no baffles and only one oil pick up point

if it's 3/4 full why not just fill it up ;-)

Seems like a fair answer. I have only had the Cayman 4-5 months and it seemed weird to be tripping a warning for oil level when it's 3/4 between min and max.

Top it up with oil is what I shall do then. I was just conscious of a failed/stuck oil level sensor and I end up putting too much oil in it.

Does anyone know if the oil level sensor is a mechanical float level or a capacitance type sensor or how it even works.

The level sensor is a dip tube type that is screwed into the top of the case and extends down into the sump.

It isn't normal for a warning to come up during hard acceleration as you noted but it will be displayed if the fuel level changes - ie after a fill-up as a reminder to check your oil

If the level is 3/4's I'd be inclined to leave it - when the oil expands with temperature you can possibly overfill the system - if it's been constant for months don't 'fix' it.

Was the warning accompanied by a beep and a 'failure indicator' display?

Well thanks Pope, you have just answered my question. I was pulling out of a petrol station at the time of my faux par.
So hence it was probably the change in fuel level that set it off.

Thanks very much for your help. Very much appreciated.
