Xbox Live restrictions help
Discussion
Sorry, old man questions here....
Buying eldest (9 yrs) xbox one for xmas. All of his friends are getting one and they will looking to play games online with one another.
I'm looking to restrict his online gaming to just his friends. Is there a way of setting it up so that I have to approve any friends requests? If I can, can I restrict any game lobby access to just his friends or will they always be public? Is this a general xbox setting or does it depend on the game you're playing?
I'm assuming I can do this by setting him up as a child, but the slight complication is that I'm not looking to age restrict the games he plays (I can do that myself by only buying games that I'm happy for him to play). So if I set him as 9 yr old, he can't play say star wars battlefront for example. Or have I missed something?

He will be online with other people who he doesn't know in real life, this is fundamental to Xbox Live. You can put parental controls on the console, but doing so locks out a lot of features and makes it hard to use the console and play a lot of games properly. It's unlikely a sexual predator will approach your child through Xbox live and as for profanity, he will hear and use worse at school.
It's funny, there is far less profanity on Xbox Live now than there used to be. I've not heard any swearing at all in Call of Duty Black Ops 3 until tonight, when I hit level 55 and topped out. Mind you, in my last game, almost as if some sort of prophetic symbol of the misery of COD, there was some little turd shouting and screaming the whole game, ranting about 'camping n*ggers' and getting wound up. Mind you, loads of the user designed emblems have words like
and f
k in them, and there are plenty of tasteless images to be seen there too.
That said, there is little you can do to control or restrict the online experience short of pulling the plug altogether. What is he going to be playing? I assume Viva Pinata and the like never really generated the same vitriol as COD/Halo.
