Quick idiots guide needed for the idiot over here

What is it? What is it used for? Why do I not seem to have it? (Got a new PC a couple of months ago, noticed a few times certain things came up with 'Your browser doesnt support Java' -or words to that effect)
How do I go about getting it?

Cheers! :

It's a programming language. It's used by some webpages to provide dynamic/interactive content.

I'm suprised it's not installed by default on your PC, but if you download and install from the link below, that should get you going.

as mentioned in another thread, Java is a programming API by Sun Microsystems, it's designed so that it can be portable and a java program will run on any system assuming an interpretor has been developed installed.

The problem came when Microsoft decided that they wanted to improve upon Sun's Java and add in their own windows only extensions thus creating their own JVM (Java Virtual Machine). Obviously this did away with the only decent thing about Java and as such Sun took MS to court and won.

You'll tend to find that MS don't include Java as standard anymore, not their own version or indeed the proper version - you need to download and install it from java.sun.com.

As previoulsy mentioned it's there to provide more interaction on web pages (applets and the like) although appears to be coming into it's own in the form of JSP pages.
