I have had to offer an item I sold to the 2nd bidder and this the first time I've use the 'second chance' offer facility.

The item sold for £770 and the second bid was for £750 so am I right in assuming the second bidder will buy at £750 not if they chose to go ahead?

Also, can I leave poor feedback for the first bidder as he reneged on the purchase or can I only leave feedback for one winner i.e. the 2nd person if they buy it? scratchchin

Yeah the second highest bidder will pay £750 if they still want it. You can't leave negative feedback, as such, anymore for buyers, which I think is pretty st.

There's a setting which blocks users who have had non-paying strikes against them, but I'll bet not many sellers know about this.

You can also block specific users by name - I used this all the time for anyone that either messed me about or did not pay. No second chances in my book.

Note that second chances are great when you have multiple of the same item to sell. Auction it off and sell one to the highest bidder and then another one to each other bidder who bid over the amount you wanted to sell it for. Most people accept 2nd chance offers if done soon after the auction ends as it saves them looking for another one.

OK thanks. I'll hope the person wants it for £750 and then I noticed a 'report this buyer' button so I might explore that for the original buyer.

I wouldn't look at it that way if I was the underbidder & you offered it to me as a Second Chance. In my view you would need to remove all the bids the winner made & I would only pay one increment above the last bid made by someone who was not the winner or underbidder.

Just so I understand, this was a one off item (an electric piano as it happens) and I have offered it to the next bidder down (is that the underbidder?). Did I use the right eBay button to do that? All this talk of underbidders and multiple items has got me worried now hehe

Yep, that would be my take too, who's to say the winner wasn't the vendor?

And you two are totally correct, I would not either, but you would be surprised how many buyers are happy to pay the full 2nd chance offer price.

Offer it, if they accept its gravy, if they are savvy they will decline as this technique is widely know n as a shill bidding scam to boost up the price.

I've had someone try this on me before. Second chance offer was made to me almost immediately after the listing ended. They put the item up again for bidding, tried bidding on that one, same thing happened again, so I sacked them off!

OK guys, hear what you're saying. It's not the case with me because it didn't even occur to me to bid for my own piano! Maybe I can prove to the guy that there was a legitimate high bidder? Perhaps I'll just re-auction it. Thanks for enlightening me on the ways people cheat at eBay laugh
