I received a call from my guitarist the other day asking me whether I'd heard about a set of speakers - BSS M250. The gullible fool had just parted with 150 notes for a pair out of the back of a big white van in Comet car park...Pillock!!!

Anyway, he explained the sales patter of the two guys which goes something like this:

We've got these top class speakers which you can have at a knock down price because the company has left them off the inventory (bloke shows fake inventory) so the company dont know we've got the stock so we can sell it to you for next to nothing (Bloke shows glossy picture with stupidly high price tag).

This can be summed up by the following:

Never buy anything from a bloke in a carpark. If it's worth buying, he'll be in a shop selling it.

I had two idiots call me over to their van on southsea common because I looked like a musician. The fact was I was broke and on my way to a nights bartending at the pyramids. I went over anyway because the devil was in me at the time. They game me the same story. When I said I didnt want them and I didnt have money from them, They tried the hard sell, asking if I had a credit card. I had a student halifax card with a £350 limit running on its limit. They called bullshit and said no CC existed less than a £500 limit. I told them where they could stick their speakers. They then proceeded to tell me they were undercover police and were arresting me for attempting to buy stolen goods (hmm, what law is this again?). I asked them to show their warrent cards, during the following heated discussion, and lack of warrent cards and ID I laughed and walked off

Couldnt agree more... I pd myself laughing at him when he told me what he'd done. The amazing thing is, he's got some geezar lined up to buy them from him for £200 because he wants some big speakers to 'really kick out some toons'
Unbelieveable!

I bought some speakers in November and the company brought them to my house, set them up and left them there for me to try at no cost.

They told me to either send a cheque in a few weeks if I wanted to keep them or phone and they'd take them back.

Just to show that there IS another side to tw*ts selling cr*p in car parks in this country.

Not often reported.

(And avoising the obvious, yes they are worth more than 150 notes and no, I'm not going to name the company!)

Over a period of about five years, I was approached about five times by people doing this scam!

I was starting to think I must have looked like a really easy mark or something...

The name of the speakers were different back then they were called 'Linear accoustics' or something, but it was the same story and the same white van every time.

I didn't know it was still going on though!

It's not just speakers, either.

Some TalkSport presenter (Mike Dickin?) said the scrote followed him into the gents and kept pestering him at the urinal......

Is this still happening. Hi-Fi mags used to run stories about this years ago. Usually the "punter" ended up with a cheap bit of furniture filled with cheap car speakers. They then rang up the nearest shop to find a "good" amp becuase the guys had said they needed one.

There is a lot of it about.

The website below is fairly indicative of what goes on - it is a worldwide scam.

I remember the smart dressed blokes in BMWs that patrolled the motorway service station car parks. They were always jewllers who had been given one or two too many watches. Came with a glossy brochure and all the boxes, retail £1000, for you sir £100, worth £5.

Tossers!!

I dont mind the watch dealers. I understand its not what they say it is, but I do understand it tells the time and looks like its worth more than it actually is, and will work for long enough (last one worked for 4 years before I threw it out of a 2nd floor window).

Good enough for me!

I had the speaker thing once - the s used two attractive girls as well. Very underhand, I was pulling my wallet out at one point.

I've also encountered two lots of Italian men that work for Valentino who had just left a meeting with the purchasing dept at Harvey Nics and wanted to offload a few coats, etc. The coats looked rather more Next than Valentino though, despite the labels. Rather a coincidence meeting these Valentino people twice though

I'm even more of a tosser because I fell for it - D'oh. In may case it was a Merc driver and he only stung me 25 quid, though. Still feel bloody stupid, though.
