Sony Store online purchases - will they play PS3 & Ps4 ?

We have a ps3 and ps4, my son wants FIFA 16 for Xmax, if I buy it on Sony store can it be played on both consoles?

Tried google but couldn't find an answer, he's got more controllers for the PS3 hence why we don't always use the PS4. Thanks

No, They are separate versions.

(Also just had a quick look on the PSN store and I don't think you can download the PS3 version.)

Thanks for the info. I thought I read somewhere that sony store purchases could be used on both consoles.

Some games have a cross buy/play feature where you can buy the game and get it for all three platforms. (PS4 PS3 VITA) Helldivers springs to mind, But these games are few and far between and tend to be sony exclusive games.
