Read this the other day over on Atlas F1.

Another "old timer" gone.

How many are left who won Grand Prix races in front engined cars now? I can only think of Stirling Moss, Phill Hill, Tony Brooks and Froilan Gonzales.

Did he?

I know he was ill back in 2000 because he was supposed to be a special guest at the last Coys Festival at Silverstone but couldn't make the journey from Argentina.

Jack Brabham raced a Maserati at the Brtish GP in 1956 but didn't win. Rich...

That doesn't count.

I was sure Gonzales was still with us too.

I was simply pointing out that he is alive and raced a front engined car.

There are several front engined race winners remaining (Salvadori et al) but I`m also struggling to think of any other Grand Prix winners still with us.

Bit sad really.

There are quite a few drivers around who raced front engined cars - some even in F1 sanctioned events. Paul Frere has already been mentioned. Dan Gurney drove for Ferrari in 1960 - in both sports and F1 cars. Cliff Allison also drove front engined Ferraris.

What I was curious about was the number of surviving drivers who had actually won Grand Prix races in a front engined car. I think my list as suggested is probably all that there are now.
