Looking at 4S that has just had a short engine rebuild from Porshe GB. Result of a spun bearing. Should this be a worry or a good thing? About 16k worth of work. Any other areas that may be a worry if this has happened? What exactly gets changed as part of this? Many thanks.

Based on my indirect experience only wha the tech determines needs to be replaced. He also is probably restricted by what the factory guidelines have to say on this subject, too.

I came upon a 996 engine for repair due to a failed IMSB. The tech told me just the IMS and its bearing, a couple of chain guide rails (the plastic covering got a bit busted up from the excessive chain play allowing the chain to slap the rails), and whatever seals, gaskets, etc. were necessary to reassemble the engine.

He did not bother to check the bearings, bores, pistons, rings, etc. for any wear/tear. The engine only had 20K miles and had been running fine before the IMSB failed. I could see the hardware and to my eye -- I have rebuilt a few engines -- no Porsche engines though -- in the past -- the hardware looked ok.

If you want to know exactly what was replaced you need to get your hands on a copy of the paperwork associated with the rebuild. This should list out what was replaced. Maybe. If done under warranty it may not.

A question I would have is, since a spun bearing is not an every day failure, why did the bearing spin? Was the owner lax about oil/filter servicing? Was the wrong oil used? Was the engine abused? Was the car tracked? Was there any attempt to confirm the oiling passages to the affected bearing clear of any debris?

The rebuild to me is neutral. Part of the issue is how well the job was done. One can't know this until after he has bought the car and put X miles on the engine and no issues arising from the rebuild have come up.

Does the car/engine come with any warranty?
