Hi. Im sure there is probably something on here about this, but i cant find it. What is the difference if any between the bottom end of the 944/968 engine. I know the head has the variocam. but is there any difference in crank and rods, ie lighter/stronger crank and rods in the 968 ??Can you tell the difference from looking at the outside of the block??

There are differences, but its been a long day and they escape me. Try ringing Jon Mitchell: he will be able to tell you immediately. I believe that the oil pump is different. There were certainly changes made to prevent oil foaming at higher revs.

Oil squirters and a shallower water jacket. I think that they had a crank scraper too, or something that affected air movement in the crank case.

Yes I think is the short answer to all of those points, its a bottom end much better suited to high revs than the S2 lump although many think no stronger.

AFAIK the 2.7, S2 and 968 blocks are pretty much the same design. Supposedly Porsche recommend changing the rods on the early 968's if the engine is ever apart. I was told by someone that knows the engines inside out that the squirters don't actually do much on a 968.
