I have a 997.1 is it wrong to want a 986 or 996 as well.....

So i bought a very nice 997.1 C2S at the begining of the year, it is a fantastic car, same 911 steering feel of old and just a wonderful handling experance, have to say even for a non boy racer it does need a pse exhaust or something similar, v quiet without......but my question is is it wrong to now want an early 996 or boxster. I would not sell the 997 thats to keep but an early boxster or 996 is just great value at the moment.

The basic-ness of an early boxster or the narrow body and great narrow end of a 996 really attracts, and the boxster especially for 4-5k ypu can get a great early one or maybe a nice 996 for 10 which again is great value. Think i just love buying cars but these cant be bad purchases....

Only you can answer whether you can have another fun car!! But I suspect that an early boxster might not be more fun than the 997. There are loss of reasons for having one though, such as wanting the topless experience or having a car as a project, or just because you can!
If you don't want a project buy with care.

If you can afford it then "Do it" is my advice.

They are different cars with different characteristics for different drives and events. When the armchair critics do their "poor man's Porsche" routine without any knowledge of how much fun the Boxster actually is, you can just smile and laugh to yourself that you COULD have taken the 911 for a drive that day but CHOSE to take the Boxster instead since it's a great car too, and such a delight on the twisties on sunny days etc...

I agree i have never been one to like cars for show more for their engineering and drivability.

And never thought the boxster or 996 was sub standard to the rest of the 911's funny i have had a 3.2 and 964 and they were nice cars but not half as nice as people now think since the prices have gone up. Early boxsters just strike me as really well balanced basic cars that are engineered well, and even considering that there were billons made they will have there moment, people only appreciate cars when the price tag goes up.... Same for the early 996's really nice balanced and still reasonably basic

Don't see the point of getting a 996 if you have a 997 already, I would get a 2.7 Boxster on smaller wheels and minimal spec

But I also have an early 986 Boxster which is enormous fun.



But there again so is my 924.

Go for it fellow, for me the 996 platform is the best 911 to have been produced, I would never sell mine. Also nothing wrong with a 996 997 combo

Thats what im talking about, well a 924 was the other car i was thinking about! Especially the s great value and really not that many made at all.

I kind of think the early boxster will be the next car to become recognised as being a great 2nd car proposition, doesnt mean the value will go up just will get a lot more recognition like the 996 is starting tooo.

Too true that man .. I've never owned a 996 or Boxster, but hey I think they are fab cars, and I'd def have an early 996 or Boxster and I'm warming rapidly to the 924 Turbo if I had the garage space.

I bought a new Boxster when they were launched and back then these things were a revelation.The engine was a really sweet unit with a nice step in the power at 4,000 rpm which made it rewarding to drive along with a great soundtrack.There was enough power to allow you to wring the cars neck without the risk of getting yourself in to trouble.I ran this car for a couple of years without a problem.

So recently I decided to revisit a 986.It was with some trepidation as I presumed I was looking back at these cars through the proverbial rose tinted specs.But no.A 986 is still a great car to drive with enormous amounts of balance and feedback.Ok you have to be careful what you buy as lots of these have been run on a shoestring budget in recent times but really these are an absolute steal these days,especially a 2.5 model which has proven to be the most robust engine fitted to the Boxster's.I even love the fried egg's!!!

and all for less than the price of a PCCB disc on my GT3!

I think it will be the xmas purchase a nice little 2.5, i always liked the 944 and 924's and have considered those as i prefer a coupe rather than the open top but i think 6 cylinders wins the day, with a nice exhaust the 944/924 are okay but just not the same .....

I see 2.5 in the £4k area is it really possibly to get a good one at that price?

I had a 997.1 C4S coupe. I also bought a 2.7 986 for sunny days. I then upgraded to 986 to a 996 Cabriolet (£12k with a Hartech rebuild).

I found that I rarely used the 997 as it was slightly dull. It was very fast and grippy but not much fun. Then I started to worry about mileage and depreciation for the 997.

I sold the 997 and now mainly use the 996. It is narrow and basic. It represents amazing value for money and I don't have to worry about parking knocks or mileage. I seem to get more good feelings from the "bargain" 996 than I did from the "expensive" 997.

17" wheels, manual, 2.5 with cable throttle , M030 suspension. PXed it for £7k with 65,000 on in 2008
It did have the facelift clear lights and an aftermarket roof with glass but they are both significant improvements
The only car I have owned apart from a 1.3 FIesta that you can wring out without fear of losing your license
Interior was pretty crap
