Second hand halfords bike, any warranty?
Discussion
Hi
I recently bought a Boardman carbon road bike from eBay, the bike was unused still in the box.
I have the signed collection note stating it was purchased in October this year from Halfords. The seller still has the sales receipt.
I've covered just over 100 miles on it and the top tube of the frame is developing what looks to be a crack, there is no evidence of impact externally it looks to be a manufacturing fault.
Would I have any case with Halfords for a repair?
I would expect the warranty only to be valid with who they sold the bike to.
Cheers for any advice.

As you have proof of purchase you can go direct to Boardman, carbon frames have a 3 year warranty - https://www.boardmanbikes.com/service/warranty.htm...
What difference does it make whose name is on the receipt, if any? Halfords aren't going to demand for ID before they'll do anything. Take it back, show them the fault, give them the receipt and they'll sort it, which will probably involve them sending back to the manufacturer anyway. If it was, I'd go direct to the manufacturer for advise first, before travelling to Halfords.
Took it into my local branch of halfords who said they couldnt do anything without the receipt which is fair enough I suppose even though it's only sold by halfords. A signed collection note doesn't count.
They didn't sell the carbon frame and couldn't figure out whether it was cracked or not, they did advise me to go to another store.
Hopefully the guy I bought it off can send me the receipt, otherwise I think I'll have to put it down to experience and get it repaired else where.

That's pretty poor. They didn't sell the carbon frame and couldn't figure out whether it was cracked or not, they did advise me to go to another store.

Only Halfords sell it, so it is clearly their responsibility.
The only potential issue is the age.
Which the collection note proves.
And the model year is also obvious in any case - the appearance of the bikes changes every year.
If you have no luck at a more bike-oriented store: jill.mcdonald@halfords.co.uk

Thanks for the replies, the guy said he'll send me the receipt so should be ok to get it sorted. There's still nothing to say they won't try and claim it's down to misuse. Im not sure it's cracked through to the carbon but that's for them to decide.
You should be fine, Halfords swap bikes out daily! Bought my wife a bike from there, it went back 3 times for bad brakes before they volunteered to swap it for a new one. Mine has been back twice and they have said it fails again they will swap out
Its a shame because Boardman bikes are good VFM but Halfords are utterly useless at building and maintaining bikes so the brand gets tarnished by this, I wont ever buy from them again

The warranty is with the retailer which is Halfords so take it back and tell them the law.
He did not buy it from Halfords so he has no contract with them, so if he takes your advice he will look like a nob, which will make 2 of you.unrepentant said:
Quite. I don't blame Halfords one bit for wanting proof of purchase. For all they know the bike could have been stolen.
I see you are another person who leaves the collection note attached to your bike after purchase. The criminal fraternity thank you for your help in conning people!
