Tempted to R Class? advice needed
Discussion
Hi Guys
Looking at possibly buying an R320 cdi (06/07) instead of having to buy an estate, is there anything specific I should be looking out for when going to view them?
Im looking for a sport model with Command and Heated seats as a minimum, not too bothered if its LWB or not (unless there's any other differences with the LWB?).
Not sure if its worth looking for one with airsuspension or not? is it worth it? (id be tempted to lower it anyway as its not going off road)
Do any owners have any real life MPG they can share?
Thanks
Med

We had one in the family from that era for quite a while and it never gave us any trouble.
It's not from the best period in MB history from a build quality point of view but it was extremely comfortable for long distances, better than anything else I've been in, in fact.
The air auspension was useful but only required if you're doing mild off roading.
Mpg wise, I think we used to get 30mpg at around 80mph and around town it was probably more like 18-20.
It's a quirky car but has some great qualities.

Do it, but do make sure you also try a LWB verson for size - so much more people & luggage space inside.
All have air suspension at the rear, with only the V8 versions getting air suspension front & rear, iirc.
I've owned the largest estate cars and the largest MPV's over the years, and the LWB R-class is without doubt the best combination of huge space with top luxury & a comfortable ride with decent handling that I've found.
We averaged 26.2 mpg over 3300 miles of very rapid progress throughout our European grand tour this summer.
35mpg while 80mph motorway cruising, 25mpg & under while cruising at 100mph & above on the unrestricted autobahns, with a high of 40mpg after cruising at 56mph on a temporary space saver spare wheel following a puncture in Hungary.
Have a look at this on the MBClub UK forum, for more thoughts about how good a family limo they are. HTH.
