Not management speak but certainly 'public-sector' speak.

Another example is "Best Value" which is known in all other circles as "Cheapest".

Try removing Prototype or Beta or any other suggestion of 'not yet fully done' from your application.

I thought the NHS was several billion pounds short already, so surprised they're playing Dragon's Den.

But as you say, you can't have a 'proven innovation'.

of course you can haven proven innovation... smile

here is my new pen - it is innovative because of xyz
it is proven because I can show that it works

it simply means that:
a) it should be new
b) you can show that it works

that is all they mean - you are / or appear to be - too early stage for them...
you say that you have a prototype - that is not finished and proven, it is a prototype... they want to fund items which are fully developed...
I suspect they are fed up with people with lots of great ideas wanting money to finish the development - they want to use the money to actually bring innovation into the NHS - not fund someone's as yet unproven pipe dream...
I suspect they will fund installation / implementation / production / etc. - just not the actual initial development

get your product - put it in free of charge for a week / month / year as applicable in to a place where it is needed - on condition that you get a report back confirming its innovative and working and successful nature...

What sort of commitment do you have from any potential customers that they will pay for it?

My take on the definition of 'proven innovation' from the NHS perspective is that it's an innovation within the NHS process, but based on process proven elsewhere within other industries.

Unless you have exmaples of your system working elsewhere it's not 'proven' from their perspective.

I've been trying to get the clinical people to take this directly for a while at a nominal price (from literally £20/month - ridiculously low I'd thought) but the rumour mill says they've been blocked up the chain because they think they can develop their own for "free" in the next FY, which I assume means they have a graduate developer with a gap on a gantt chart.
A good chance this is the case. Large swathes of the NHS still think that private business is evil. Unless of course you can find a way to engineer yourself to be "flavour of the month" with some high profile sponsors...

In some cases you'll find that internal/"flavour of the month" providers seem to get sponsored/supported, even if their products/services don't actually meet the official requirements laid out in guidance, to the direct detriment of private providers whose services do.

I wouldn't pour much money in unless you've worked out how to gain access to key influencers within the system.

yes Anything else is a prototype.

Buying something that isn't proven is a risk.

Convincing someone to buy something that is a prototype is tricky at the best of times. When that customer is an unwieldy organisation like the NHS it is made even harder.

As much as I hate the term, have you tried the "co-innovation" angle with them?

I work for Poole NHS and would be interested to see what you have.

we are working on integrating some systems at the moment and if your tool does what you say and actually provides an integration not an interface then that would interesting.

I think you might of pitched to the wrong people, I could probably help with that also.

I'll also be honest and tell you if your idea is rubbish/already exists. smile

Which 'body' did you approach? There are a number of them.

Is it hard cash you're after or a route in to the NHS? Have you considered other avenues for development funding, including existing players?
